Demo in Berlin, 05.05.2014, Trauermahnwache, ru Botschaft

Dear Voices of Ukraine readers

We need your help! We are running on very tight resources, mainly human resources. We are constantly in need of good translators and editors for our content. Translators, please have a firm grasp of Russian and/or Ukrainian and English or German. Lots of our articles need final proof-reading. We look for help from native speakers and those of similar skill. So far we have concentrated our work on translations into English and German. Our readers with high proficiency in those two languages are very welcome to join our team on regular or not-quite-so-regular basis. We work hard to bring to you the best quality while remaining an entirely voluntary project with no external financing or donations. All we could offer is work for a good cause and discovering more about intricacies of the current situation in Ukraine. If you would like to try it out, use our contact form – we will then get back to you.

UPDATE: Dear everyone, since it was mentioned several times in comments: You don’t necessarily have to speak Ukrainian or Russian to be able to help us but it certainly helps. Basically, knowledge of either Ukrainian or Russian is welcome, but it is not essential. Solid knowledge of English/German language writing and most especially, any editing experience, are needed.

VOICES OF THE REVOLUTION: Hero Romko from Maidan

Everyone remembers the photograph of a seemingly very young soldier of the Square which was at the center of the painful events of February 18th [2014]. Most international agencies published this file. And after the events I repeatedly mentioned this guy. Who is he? How has his fate unfolded? Is he still intact? I asked many in the Square, showing them his photo. Nobody could tell me anything about him. Yesterday, by chance, I was able to see him near the Verkhovna Rada!

  • Hey! You’re the same guy who fought on Instytutskiy Street?
  • Yes, it’s me. Why? – He asked me, wary.
  • Nothing, just very happy to see you. Really liked your shot on the Internet. What is your name?
  • Romko.
  • And where are you from?
  • From the Square.
  • Well, this I understood. But where from by birth?
  • From Kiev region.
  • From the region?
  • And what’s it to you? I said already, from the region, take that.
  • Well, ok, if you do not want to – don’t tell.

Next, little by little, I still managed to converse with the little hero – and where he’s from, and that he is an orphan, and where, during all this turbulent time he continues to live on Maidan, and what he does. But, let this nonetheless remain our little mystery. For now, Romchyk. See you.

Meanwhile in Dnipropetrovsk, It’s Protest Piano Tango Duet!

They’re calling it the “Banderite tango in Dnipropetrovsk…”

FB VIDEO–take a listen!: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=888791091146493&set=vb.100000468315241&type=2&theater

The first melody is “Kiss of Fire” and the second is Bohdan Veselovsky’s “Lety Toozhlyva Pisnya” [Fly, Sorrowful Song]–both from the 1950s.

And because you cannot have tango music without dancing, in Lviv, on the same day, there was tango dancing!

Somehow the 2 cities were united on the same wavelength today…

More about Bohdan Vesolovsky / Богдан Весоловський (1915-1971) was a popular Ukrainian songwriter and composer of tangos, foxtrots, waltzes and rumbas. He was born in Vienna, studied law and music in Lviv, and performed in the city’s celebrated Yablonsky, or “Yabtso” band. After World War II he ended up in Canada where he eventually became head of the Ukrainian Service of Radio Canada International in Montreal.

Fascinating video about his band, his life and times from Ukraine to Canada: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuKpa4QJGfo&list=RDD-omW34mzbU
