Crowd swells on Hrushevskoho Street as standoff with police intensifies; three deaths reported, two from gunshot wounds (live updates)

Police this morning rip down barricades to disperse protesters on Hrushevskoho Street near Kyiv’s Dynamo Stadium, in a bid to end a standoff that has claimed one life and injured more than 100 people since Jan. 19. However, after retreating several dozen meters, protesters regrouped and continued the standoff. The image above is a screen shot from Espresso TV’s live feed.

A crowd chanting “Murderers!” and “Glory to Ukraine” briefly retreated this morning after a police assault on their positions killed at least two persons by gunshot. A third victim, also a protester, reportedly died from injuries in a fall.

The demonstrators quickly regrouped and renewed parts of barricades torn down by officers and returned to their original standoff point on Hrushevskoho Street after getting pushed back to European Square, some 500 meters away.

Live stream of standoff between police and protesters near Kyiv’s Dynamo Stadium

When news of the police advance circulated this morning, people started rushing to the scene, swelling by 9 a.m. the crowd size that had dwindled considerably overnight. Several hundred demonstrators were estimated to be at the scene by mid-morning, resuming a violent conflict that began on Jan. 19. They shouted “Come to our side!” to the police and lobbed Molotov cocktails and fireworks as an Orthodox Church priest tried to mediate.

Gunshots were fired overnight, killing two EuroMaidan protesters, both men, according to Oleg Musiy, the coordinator of medical services for the demonstration said this morning. Meanwhile, a third death — also of a man, reportedly from injuries in a fall — has been confirmed but with few details.

Musiy confirmed both gunshot victims and said it’s not possible that the fatal injuries occurred from rubber bullets police had been using to fire on demonstrators. “It is impossible,” Musiy said, meaning that the bullets used were conventional. One died from a gunshot wound to the heart; the other from multiple gunshot wounds, Musiy said.

Both victims were said to be men in their 20s or 30s who joined the protest camp. Their names had not been officially released this morning.

Protesters attended to a man fatally shot this morning. There are reports he was fired on by a police sniper.

The victim was brought to the medical service with “four wounds to the head, neck, on a chest. The experts will check whether the bullets were rubber.”

The death is the first confirmed since EuroMaidan confrontations started two months ago and comes on a holiday called Unity Day, meant to celebrate the nation’s first declaration of independence in 1919, uniting east and west Ukraine.

Meanwhile, shortly after the police push, more protesters returned to the square by Kyiv’s Dynamo Stadium, the scene of violence since Jan. 19 in which more than 100 police and protesters have reportedly been hurt in clashes.

Today, the draconian laws approved by pro-presidential majority on Jan.16, came into effect. The laws pave the way for a massive government crackdown on protesters, activists and journalists.

On Hrushevsky Street, police are repeatedly blasting a message from their loudspeaker to back off and stop mass disorders, warning that it’s a “grave violation of law.”

“The department of interior affairs demands that you stop these actions,” the message says.

Around 8 a.m. the police ripped apart protesters’ barricades on Hrushevsky Street in an effort to end the standoff. Earlier, they had destroyed a catapult constructed to fire rocks and other objects at their ranks. Throughout the night, police heavily fortified their positions and protesters expected a strike.

20-year-old Armenian Serguiy Nigoyan
Hero of Ukraine

20-year-old Armenian Serguiy Nigoyan is the Hero of Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!  ( the 1-st victim)

In the project EPeople (Elyudi) he told that from the beginning watched on TV news about Maidan and could not sleep at nights. On December, 7 his neighbour from the village brought him to Dnipropetrovsk. Serguiy was searching where people gathered in Dnipropetrovsk to support the Euromaidan in Kiev. He was searching, searching but did not find. Then he arrived to the railway station. He purchased a ticket to a train to Kyiv. He called his parents by phone already from the Maidan. “My father asked where I have disappeared”, – the fellow retold their conversation. When he found out where his son was, he became very agitated and asked him to be careful. Serguiy slept in a tent or in the trade unions house. On the question why he arrived to Maidan, he answered: “This is my future as well. I will live in this country”. But his fate was different…

The line has definitely been crossed.
I urge everyone who can still think about the consequences to come to the side of the people.
Berkut members have killed people. Not just one person, not accidentally, and far beyond the need for the necessary self-defence. Anyone can see, this means a lot.
Some international sanctions are already in place, and that is not even the beginning. The reaction of the citizens is all the more evident. It might be too late to correct anything later on, this is the final moment.

One more person has been killed at the Groushevskoho street.
One more protester whose name is yet unknown died because of injuries:
Mykola Sivak, a doctor on duty, told the “Ukrainian truth” about this. The young man’s age was 20-25 years. He was shot in chest in the area of heart. He was delivered to the medical section around 8:00 in the morning having already no pulse. The dead’s body was in the medical section at the Groushevskogo street that has been recently dislocated in one of the buildings. At the present moment, police is working there and identification is being continued. At 10:58 a.m. the body was already taken away from the medical section. It was informed earlier that Serguiy Nigoyan died because of bullet injuries.
Moreover, on the eve one of the protesters fell down from the colonnade and died after resuscitation. ~Ukrainian Truth sprotiv.org Diese Seite gefällt mir · vor 5 Stunden

Already 2 hours ago the number of people on Maidan was at 50 thousand, beautiful, wonderful, friendly, fearless. I took some photos, and well, if I live and God allows, I will give a presentation. But these cattle went for broke, in my opinion for them again something went wrong, it did not go when and not as wanted. But I am afraid that they will use machine guns against the people. Then the victims will be very large. They are gathering all legal owners of arms, they announced the formation of the National Guard. When I came to the bank of our security I accidentally received information that I throw here. I think they all have a desire to crush the big meeting at 18.00, whether it works or not – I do not know. Depending on the number of officers, commandos, people with fighting experience and availability of necessary weapons in the first place. For now, stepping out of connection to wait…

URGENT –  to 16.00 (4pm) they are evacuating Nadra bank branch in Maidan, our head of security says it all concerns everyone in the center. So the storm is during 16.00 to 18.00
Please distribute to all.

The US refuses to issue visas to some ukrainian government officials:

As an answer for the civil unrest happening in Ukraine since November 2013, the US decided to impose visa sanctions for officials of Ukraine who are considered to be guilty for the violence against protesters in Kiev. This information comes from the US embassy in Kiev.

“We cannot comment on individual cases, since visa issues are considered to be confidential. The US-governmental authority has a broad scope of judgement, about whom the consider eligible to obtain a visa and whom not. We also consider further steps again those who bear the responsibility for the current violence” says the publication of the embassy.

It has to be mentioned that opposition members have called many times for sanctions and visa restrictions against government representatives.
Earlier some agencies have told that USA want to avoid giving Visas to some members of parliament, especially for Volodymyr Oliynik.

And now your attention please.
Հանգիստ խաղաղ.
From this moment (22nd January 2014), the murderer(s) of Sergei Nigoyan on Grushevskovo street in Kiev are the enemy of all Armenians in the world. The situation calls for swift intervention from all of the world’s Armenian organisations.
A more complex task lies on the shoulders of Ukrainian Armenians: to find his murderers and everybody complicit in this crime. You could call this task “Nemesis 2”, or however you wish. We found everyone involved in the Genocide, no matter what
corner of the globe they were hiding in. It won’t be any more difficult to find our guys in Ukraine.

To all Ukrainian Armenians and Armenians of the world, along with:
#ArmenianNationalCommitteeofAmerica
#ArmenianSecretArmyfortheLiberationofArmenia
#EmbassyoftheRepublicofArmenia
etc.

Henceforth, nobody who is in any way connected with Sergei’s murder is safe.
Remember this.
Those who murdered an Armenian are our main objective. And it doesn’t matter to us at all whether that turns out to be the “far right”, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Al- Qaeda, or the Curling Lovers’ Association of the Vanuatu Islands. It doesn’t matter to us one bit.

Please, repost as much as possible! Let all of your Armenian friends know about this!

Cabinet of ministers authorized the police to act as during a state of emergency
Resolution #12 from January 22 strengthens the authority of riot police and government bodies.

Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution on “The procedure of taking extra security measures for citizens” #12 from January 22 signed by the prime-minister Nikolay Azarov. As it is set forth in the resolution, the Procedure determines the mechanism of taking “extra measures” by internal affairs bodies “in order to guarantee the rights and freedoms of man and of the citizen and proper functioning of governmental authorities of Ukraine”.

“2. In case there is information on probable disturbance of public order, a threat of taking extremist actions, breach of legislation during public meetings, street processions and demonstrations, internal affairs authorities take the following extra measures aimed at ensuring rights and freedoms of a human and of the citizen and proper functioning of governmental authorities of Ukraine: temporary restrictions of traffic flow on the streets, roads, objects (territories); temporary restriction of access to certain territories and objects”, – as the text goes.

Third, it is mentioned, that extra measures “do not apply to the citizens, employees of the institutions, entities and organizations, service vehicles of specific and special purpose etc.”

The document, published on the government’s website, summarizes: “Extra measures are taken and ceased by the decision of the appropriate head of the department of the ministry of internal affairs. 5. Information on taking extra measures is communicated to the public”.

The document has de facto authorized the police to act as if during the state of emergency.

EU ON SANCTIONS:
The EU is not yet talking about the introduction of targeted sanctions against members of the Ukrainian leadership, but is ready to check the accounts of the Ukrainian oligarchs in the EU banks.

This was announced by the EU Budget Commissioner, Janusz Lewandowski, as reported by the UNIAN correspondent in Brussels.

“The EU will go beyond statements of condemning violence. At the moment we are not talking about any sanctions from the EU, but there are oligarchs’ interests, there are bank accounts that can be checked ” he said.

“These steps can be taken before the imposition of sanctions, but they can be felt if they touch on the interests of the ruling groups in Ukraine”, – said the EU Commissioner.

Lewandowski added that the chances of signing the Association Agreement are now “reduced to zero”, and that the agenda of the EU and Ukraine is dominated by negative reactions and statements.

Activists on Grushevskovo street recognise sniper who has caused 17 to lose vision in one eye! safe_image.php

I’m not going to rush events and disclose all information about this so-called ‘person’.
But activists claim that is was indeed this man who intentionally shot at the heads of protesters, aiming particularly at journalists. Almost all victims describe events identically: one cop aimed a spotlight on the victim, while a second shot at them, aiming specifically for the eye.

A request to anyone who has information: please confirm or deny this.

For now, we only know for sure that this person is part of the Berkut, who are shooting at people.
Whether he is the sniper we’re looking for is yet to be proven.

So before publishing more detailed information about him, I would like to be sure….

Cruel persecution of demonstrators is partly viewable on Live-Tickers. The EU should immediatly reverse long-period-visa of the commiters and freeze the funds of their bank-accounts. That seems to be the only language they understand.

The World Economic Forum greeted Azarov with no handshakes and a minute of silence.

The World Economic Forum in Davos, unlike Mr. Azarov, does not believe that the people killed by the police ”beasts”, whom he praises, ”had brought it on themselves”.

A minute of silence was declared at the economic forum in Davos in commemoration of those killed in the events in Kiev on the Hrushevskoho street.
The following was stated by Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament on his Twitter account, writes UNN.
”A minute of silence for Ukraine casualties in working session in Davos 2014. Any economic development needs peace in the country first” wrote Schulz.

Earlier, the EP President Martin Schulz wrote that he was shocked by the deaths in Kiev riots and called on the opposing sides to return to dialogue.

As reported earlier, during the last four days, starting on 19 January there had been continuous mass confrontations between the protesters and the police, which took place on Hrushevskoho street in the Ukrainian capital. Today the Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed the death by firearms of two of the protesters. Some media sources have reported four deaths. At the same time, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, who is also attending the World Economic Forum in Davos today, had said that the protesters themselves are to blame for the deaths and that he is proud of the men in uniform who are shooting the activists on Hrushevskoho street

“Radio Svoboda” was notified of this by the niece of the deceased activist. According to her, her father, who is a brother to Yuri Verbytsky, had just identified the body in the Boryspil morgue. Earlier, the spokesman of the administration of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine in Kyiv Oblast, Nikolay Zhukovych, had said to ” Radio Svoboda” that the body of a man found on the morning of 22 January in the forest near the village of Gnidyn, in Boryspil district, Kyiv oblast, was now in the morgue. A forensic examination to establish the cause of death is being conducted.
“The investigation team that went to the scene did not find any signs of a violent death and had sent the body to the morgue for forensic examination. But the investigators had nevertheless started criminal proceedings under Article 115, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code -“premeditated murder”, as there was adhesive tape found on the clothes. The arms were not bound. It is a man, 40-45 years of age. I have yet no information regarding his height, length and color of the hair, eye color or clothes”, – said the spokesman. He did not specify whether that person might be Yuri Verbytsky, who was kidnapped from the hospital on January 21 together with the civil activist Igor Lutsenko. According to the spokesman of the regional department of the Interior Ministry, “the relatives have been invited for identification ” and everything would be clear soon.

Olga Marsh is right—the real battle for Ukraine’s independence is only beginning. All these years we lived in Mordor were somewhat changed, but still Soviet in form. Thanks to Yanukovych, the hidden dirt has been uncovered. It turned out that freedom carried certain terms. Monsters from the past simply took a break, quieting down in order to turn us back to the horrors from which we escaped.Kravchuk’s reaction shows us his arrogant statements concerning Yanukovych—that he is the only one who is able to bring back stability and ensure the safety and value of Ukraine’s citizens. By upholding the dictatorship’s acts, Kravchuk not only invalidates his own opinions before the people, but also underlines that Ukraine’s independence was a fiction. If we do not grasp this final chance for sovereignty, sad to say, then destiny awaits us.

It is impossible to “scrub off” Maidan.
It is very important the protesting people have started moving forward on Vulytsya Luteranskaya as well. I have already said many times and want to repeat again: it is imperative to act from various directions.
When it is being said that Yanukovitch’s regime will “scrub off” Maidan, it is necessary to understand that they cannot “scrub off” anything anymore. Maidan as it is cannot be “scrubbed off”. Moreover, there are currently tens of thousands of people there. One must understand that if Yanukovich and Russian special forces that manage and control his actions, use force against Maidan, that people clearly have weapons in their possession as well. And if weapons are to be used, they will be used by all the parties to the conflict. Moreover, Maidan cannot be “scrubbed off” because, as mentioned by Mr. Gritsenko, there are snipers among the revolutionaries too. Under such circumstances elimination of the officers of “Berkut” and internal police may begin. If any more people will be killed among the protestors, then people at Maidan may start protecting their lives. Any more deaths and people’s war is about to go in full force in Ukraine. These are the things that the individuals who are in charge of military forces and who are directing them against people should be thinking of.

Police Forces beat grandmother Valya Bilan, seen here pleading with them to shoot her and not another grandfather, so they beat her for sport.

Translated by Elena Kartyshova
This is my neighbor, Aunt Valya Bilan. A day ago she got her leg wounded with a bullet. However, she came back. And today, when “Berkut” soldiers were “murdering an 86-year-old grandpa”, filming this “game” on video while laughing hysterically, she dropped on her knees in front of them and was begging them to stop or at least kill her instead of him. And they did so; however, Thank God, she was not murdered. They were hitting her on the ribs with metal sticks and kept laughing while asking her repeatedly: “You’ve got enough yet, bitch?”

Ukrainians call for UN Security Council meeting over Ukraine violence
NEW YORK, Jan. 22 – Ukrainians living in New York on Wednesday called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council amid escalating violence in Ukraine as the government had used deadly force against protesters.
Alexander Shevchenko, the oldest member of the Ukrainian parliament raised the issue of voting in the National Council of Ukraine. He calls on all deputies representing the nation present at the vote, who did not vote for the anti-democratic laws, be ready to champion a democratic European choice in Ukraine, the Ukrainian national anthem. He asks for a minute of silence in memory of those killed in battle with the regime. He asks that they vote for a National Government of Ukraine, to implement national urban councils, municipal militia, an all-Ukrainian national vote of non confidence in Yanukovych and his discredited government.

Activists, detained on Hrushevskoho, taken out of Kyiv, stripped and beaten As reported by the Facebook-page of “SVOYI”, the 21 activists, which have been detained on Hrushevskoho street this morning never reached the Pechersk district police department. Instead, they were taken to the suburbs of Kyiv in an unknown direction in a paddy wagon. While in the car, they were stripped to the waist and beaten. This information came from the activist Marjan Gavrilov, who managed to send a text message directly from the paddy wagon. At the moment the exact location of detainees is still unknown. “SVOYI” has appealed to MPs and journalists for assistance in searching for the 21 detained activists.

On January 22 st. at Hrushevskoho str. in Kyiv, right after the second attack of “Berkut” has pushed the protesters further away, 6 riot policemen entered the premises of the Red Cross, where doctors were taking care of the injured.”Berkut” then began to destroy storefronts. Then they threw in some light and noise grenades and sprayed in the tear gas, at which point the doctors were forced to flee, leaving all the medical supplies behind.Upon entering the building one of the “Berkut” policemen shot at one of the workers who tried to bring one of the injured outside. They fired, despite the fact that the nurse was wearing a red vest with the symbols of the Red Cross and had even shown his ID.The victim said that he was shot on purpose: “At first he was aiming at my face, but then he lowered his weapon and shot me in the leg. Of course, they can then say that it was an accident, but he looked me in the eye. This was done intentionally.”The explosion of the light & noise grenades had destroyed almost all of the windows and glass doors of the premises. The nurse commented, ””berkut” police ignores all and any humanitarian and protective activities of the Red Cross and calls all of us criminals, both the doctors, the press, and the ordinary people.”

A couple of days ago, the court let out from the house arrest the 17-year old Mikhail Niskohuz, that was captured at the Grushevskovo street. The things he told me, got me a me a cold sweat. He said he was captured by the Kiev Berkut on the order of major Vasylyenko.

They got him naked, make him pass through the “gate” and beat him, then forced him to sing the national anthem on the snow. He also got his buttocks cut and his hand broken.

There should be his press conference tomorrow.

God help us!

It is 9 p.m. in Kiev. Yuriy Timofeev reports from Hrushevskoho Street. There are thousands of people here. A staged defense was erected comprised of three barricades 100 meters away from the wall of fire. Police are trying to put it out from their side, while protesters are fueling it from theirs. People move as a stream, among them many are old people and women. There are appeals for women to leave and head home, but they do not move. Women-volunteers pass around food and medical facemasks. Tree brunches are cut, two old cars are brought, car tires are tied together, and a porta potty is disassembled. All to be used in the erection of barricades. Majority of protesters wear no protection. Through the wall of fire, come occasional gunshots and grenades.

Statement by the NATO Secretary General on events in Ukraine

I am extremely concerned about the dramatic developments in Ukraine and the reports of several deaths in Kyiv.

I strongly condemn the use of violence. Violence can never be the answer to a political crisis.

It is urgent that all parties engage in a real dialogue, show restraint and avoid any further escalation.

Friends, if you are familiar with the Russians, who still do not understand who and why is fighting on the streets of Kyiv – please show them these photos. Show that “west ukrainian radicali” here “sew chaos and terrorize peaceful citizens.”
