From the start of the military intervention, Ukrainian counter-intelligence has stopped the activity of around 40 Russian Special Forces personnel, as well as informants recruited by them – who included both Russian and Ukrainian citizens.

An armed attack on the “Alpha” personnel of the special forces unit in Sloviansk, Donetsk oblast [region], was carried out by a Russian special ops group under the command of a Spetsnaz officer of the GRU, Igor Strelkov, censor.net has reported, citing zn.ua.

“Before arriving in Ukraine, Strelkov went out to Moscow, where he received instructions on the nature of his activities on Ukrainian territory. It has been determined that members of a special ops group numbering more than 30 men under Strelkov’s command carried out an armed attack on the SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] personnel, causing the death of one SBU member and the injury of three others,” Vitaly Naida, one of the heads of the counter-intelligence department, said at briefing in Kiev on Wednesday.

“The main goal of the activity of the special operatives on Ukrainian territory is maximum destabilisation of the situation” – he noted.

According to Naida, from as early as November of last year, Ukrainian counter-intelligence received information about the intentions of the Russian side to destabilise the situation in Ukraine using units from the Black Sea fleet of the Russian Federation. “This information was reported to the former command of the SBU but, criminally, the information was ignored” – he noted.

Naida reported that from the beginning of the military intervention, Ukrainian counter-intel has stopped the activity of around 40 HUMINT personnel of the Russian special ops forces, as well as sources recruited by them – both Russian and Ukrainian citizens.

He also recalled that 5 criminal cases are pending under the article “state treason,” with other criminal proceedings pending for “espionage,” “illegal use of firearms” as well as for mass disturbances.

As was reported earlier, on April 15, the SBU began a criminal investigation into Strelkov’s conspiracy to premeditated murder, as well as actions to the detriment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, carrying out subversion and sabotage, and the organization of mass disturbances on the territory of the eastern regions of our country.

Situation in Pchelkino

6:30 pm EEST (04.16.2014)

According to data received by Information Resistance, approximately 1,500 separatists are currently blocking 16 armored vehicles and 500 servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the railway crossing in the vicinity of Pchelkino township (by Kramatorsk). They started the blockade at 11:00 am (EEST).

Screen Shot 2014-04-16 at 11.18.41 AM

The armed insurgents are constantly receiving advice on the phone from their coordinators, and [currently] indicate that they do not have orders to use weapons.

Earlier, 4 armored vehicles with 20 servicemen on board drove past the railway crossing, where they were also blocked by a crowd of locals.

Separatists attempted to persuade Ukrainian servicemen to switch sides. The servicemen took up defensive positions around the perimeter and would not let the separatists approach the vehicles.

The [Ukrainian military] Commander made an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate with the separatists.

Separatists organized checkpoints at the entrances to the townships of Pchelkino and Plotniki. They do not hide the fact that they are waiting for the command to open fire.

Update on Pchelkino

Negotiations in Kramatorsk were between the command of the 25th Separate Dnipropetrovsk Airborne Brigade of Ukrainian Ground Forces on one side, and on the other side – the so-called “little green men.”

They had St. George ribbons on their uniforms. These people were masked and armed.

As a result of these negotiations, Ukrainian servicemen were released from the blockade, and in return, the servicemen gave up the bolts and firing pins without which the weapons cannot shoot. According to the soldiers themselves, they are going back to Dnipropetrovsk.

The servicemen also noted that there were no clashes with locals during their blockade. Moreover, people brought them food, canned food and drinking water.

“We received a command to move from point “A” to point “B,” I don’t know where exactly. Local civilians treat us well. People just stand here and won’t let us through, telling us to go back to our Brigade,” said Oleksiy Mitkov, one of the servicemen.

Civilians that obstructed the movement of armored vehicles in Pchelkino are also saying that the servicemen behaved in a civilized manner, and that they have stopped the troops because they don’t want gunfire near their homes.

“We gathered here to stop these vehicles. We are not comfortable with this. We don’t need a civil war. These boys are ours, how are they going to shoot at us?” says Alla, a local resident.

Not all servicemen were left without their guns, one soldier on every armored vehicle kept a combat-ready automatic machine gun.

Situation at the Kramatorsk airfield

6:30 pm EEST (04.16.2014)

Dmitry Tymchuk – https://www.facebook.com/dmitry.tymchuk/posts/484147785047215

The airfield in Kramatorsk is currently being blocked by 50-60 separatists. They broke the fence, but made no attempts to enter the airfield.

Separatists are constantly attempting to provoke Ukrainian troops. Servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces took up their positions. There is a possibility that the extremists will attempt to seize [the airfield] after nightfall.

The sky over Kramatorsk is constantly patrolled by airplanes and helicopters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Situation in Mariupol

00:08 am EEST (04.17.2014)

Update by Dmitry Tymchuk: https://www.facebook.com/dmitry.tymchuk/posts/484214451707215?stream_ref=10

According to Information Resistance data, there is an armed fight in the vicinity of a military base in Mariupol.

At the moment, Ukrainian servicemen have rebuffed two attacks, using their weapons to kill.

The base is currently being attacked by “little green men.” However, according to our information, these are not Russian servicemen but fighters amidst local separatists who have undergone the basic military training, and are wearing the corresponding uniforms without any insignias.

They are under the command of representatives from the GRU.

1:08 am EEST (04.17.2014)

Update by Dmitry Tymchuk – https://www.facebook.com/dmitry.tymchuk/posts/484236075038386

Ukrainian forces in Mariupol repelled the attack. The attackers themselves are clearly shocked, since they did not expect the counteraction. As this event demonstrated, the use of adequate force works way more efficiently than a “highly moral” pacifism.

Dmitry Tymchuk’s Military Blog: Summary – April 16, 2014

Dmitry Tymchuk, Information Resistance

04.16.2014
Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

10173325_481968728598454_1124228004_nBrothers and sisters,

Here’s the Summary for April 16, 2014 (for the  previous day’s summary, please see the Summary for April 15).

The bad news:

There will be only one item of bad news today. Because it already covers all the other negative news.

The anti-terrorist operation (ATO) – all of the high expectations put onto it are not justified.

I don’t even want to comment on the actions of the army. This is quite surreal.

Our attempts to clarify the situation have gobsmacked us even more, and gave us a partial understanding of why this surrealism is happening in general. For the whole day, we, the coordinators of Information Resistance group, have been in negotiations, meetings, and consultations. The overall result [of this] is discouraging. Friends, please forgive me, I am not at liberty to discuss everything, so here’s the general breakdown of what I can talk about (and in my opinion, should talk about).

The ATO has been planned, the means and capabilities have been defined, and the tasks – set. However, special forces were put under the strictest limitations and conditions of their actions, such that a successful ATO should be considered a miracle of religious proportions. The Operation Commander – if he can succeed under the current conditions – will be able to walk on water just as easily as on land, and to cure the paralyzed with his mere touch. This person could easily be considered a miracle worker and canonized while alive.

I don’t know if these conditions, established today for the ATO, will change after tomorrow’s meeting in Geneva. But today, if we wanted to empower the extremists, we could just arrange for a distribution of weapons from army arsenals and stop tormenting our special forces.

And here’s something specifically for the senior military and political leadership of Ukraine. Today, we recorded no less than 300 Russian Spetsnaz special ops troops at the Russian border with Ukraine.

The worst is yet to come. In fact, it is now in Taganrog [city in Rostov oblast, Russia], where around 2,000 “little green men” are ready for their deployment into Ukraine. No commentary.

Good news:

1. Yulia Tymoshenko has said that she supports the immediate introduction of a state of emergency in oblasts [regions] of Russian aggression.

I understand that this is pre-election PR. But this is the type of PR that plays into the hands of Ukraine’s present interests. Of course, one would hope that our politicians will continue to think about our state beyond PR-acts, but this is just a wish.

The introduction of a state of emergency will greatly simplify the work of security forces. I talked about this earlier so I won’t repeat the details.

2. Russia has recognized its economic problems caused [by the situation] in Crimea.

Alexey Ulyukaev, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation was forced to admit: due to the “deterioration of the international situation” and “capital flight,” the Russian economy is undergoing a slow-down. Simultaneously, the United States declared its readiness to introduce new sanctions against Moscow.

I am glad that in the Kremlin they have started to turn their brains on. Alas, we still do not see that it has affected Putin’s plans regarding aggression against Ukraine at all.

3. In response to the promise of the Russian media that Yanukovych will return to Donetsk on Easter, acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine Oleg Mahnitsky announced that, if his type appears in Ukraine, he should expect a warm welcome.

Mahnitsky reminded everyone that four criminal proceedings are currently underway against Yanukovych, and we’re talking about serious crimes.

Whether our law enforcement will be able to fulfill this promise or not, I don’t know. But this is another reason for a cowardly Yanukovych to wet his pants.

And so, my friends, I have a very heavy heart in general after the events of today. I would like to return to my previously hopeful “format” now. And I would like to wish that tomorrow brings all of us the understanding that God has not forgotten Ukraine.

We will keep our multilingual Facebook page “EuroMaidan As It Is”

and the Twitter account “MaidanOnline.”

Here’s our updated manifesto:

Voices of Ukraine was formed in response to an urgent need for accurate information about events in Ukraine to go global in several languages. We are in Ukraine and other countries globally and network closely with those involved in current events to verify sources and translate reliable information.

Our volunteer translation and editing project works to give a realistic picture of the ground reality of the Ukrainian political and cultural space. Not long ago, we covered the massive, peaceful, anti-government protest in Ukraine called Maidan (EuroMaidan) which started in mid-November of 2013.

Currently, we cover information about the Russian invasion in eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Beyond politics, we feature the cultural life and projects of Ukrainian residents and activists. We source eyewitness accounts of events covered in the media. We network with reliable experts who are added to our team as needed to verify sources, or to provide daily military summaries. We create other features in response to current events.

Volunteers translate statements, analyses, interviews, articles, blog posts & social media updates from Ukrainian and Russian languages into English, German, and other languages (French, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese). All translations carry links to their original sources, and all translations are our original translation and editing work, unless otherwise noted.

If you feel that you can help as a volunteer translator, an editor or a Facebook content manager,

Donezker Region – Stand um 18.30 Uhr bei Kramatorsk

Dmitry Tymchuk
