OPEN LETTER TO THE ARTISTS WHO SUPPORT PUTIN’S ACTIONS IN CRIMEA AND UKRAINE

dalia

On 11th of March, on the internet page of Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, a controversial statement signed by Valery Gergiev, Yuri Bashmet, Denis Matsuev and 508 additional Russian artists was published. Many famous musicians and other representatives of Russian artists’ community thus announced their direct “support for the position of President of the Russian Federation regarding Ukraine and Crimea”. Because of this, I am directly forced to announce my shock, dismay and disagreement with that particular statement.

Dmitri Shostakovich is widely known as something of an archetype about artist’s ambivalent role in a dictatorship. Although he publicly supported the politics of Stalin’s regime, he later claimed having encountered ‘inner resistance’ against the system all those years. Is this the role of you have taken too, Mr…

One of the objectives of the UWC is to “monitor democratic processes, including elections and referendums.” In accordance, since 1999 the UWC has consistently participated in monitoring the electoral process in Ukraine.

The goal of the UWC Mission is to support a more open and transparent electoral process in Ukraine during elections scheduled for 25 May 2014, specifically to monitor adherence to the law, prevent violations and provocations at polling stations during voting and provide an assessment of the electoral process.

Crimean Anschluss Hasn’t Made Russia a Great Power, Moscow Analyst Says

Staunton, May 14 – Polls show that many Russians now view their country as once again a great power as a result of the Crimean Anschluss, but that immediate emotional response while very real is neither accurate – this action alone is insufficient for such a status – nor likely to be any longer lasting than the boost Vladimir Putin got from the Sochi Olympiad.

In an article in “Gazeta” yesterday, Igor Nikolayev, the director of the FBK Institute for Strategic Analysis, says that Vladimir Putin’s actions in Crimea have clearly been sufficient for many Russians to conclude that Russia is now a great power but argues that they are not sufficient to make it one.

INFORMATION RESISTANCE: Separatists took a factory serviceable combat engineering vehicle from Kramatorsk

By Information Resistance

Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

Our IR group had questions regarding a combat engineering vehicle taken by insurgents from Kramatorsk …

imr

According to yesterday’s media reports, separatists took the inoperable combat engineering vehicle [CEV], decommissioned a long time ago, from the premises of the Novokramatorsk Machine Building Plant [NKMZ]. The press service of the plant confirmed this information.

“Engineering equipment manufactured over 20 years ago is currently inoperable and has been decommissioned for scrap metal. Subsequently, the CEV was loaded into the transporter and taken from the premises,” said the announcement from yesterday.

Information Resistance became aware of some details of these events. According to our information, separatists visited the plant, negotiated with the enterprise management, and personally verified that the CEVs they were interested in were indeed inoperable. Later the events progressed in a slightly different way than the machine plant stated.

According to our information, after the armed men departed, the dismantled CEVs were moved to one of the plant workshops where reconstruction has been performed for several days. It turns out that on May 14, separatists took not “scrap metal,” but a CEV in working order from the plant.

What an odd situation: either the plant management is unaware of what their workers do, or they deliberately concealed the information, thereby assisting the separatists. Moreover, at the present moment, there are two more decommissioned CEVs at the NKMZ that separatists are well aware of.

It’s worth noting that such vehicles are used to lay out roads in rough terrain, in forests, and in urban rubble, and for digging and backfilling trenches.

Notably, the president of the publicly traded company (PJSC) Novokramatorsk Machine Building Plant is the people’s deputy of the Verkhovna Rada [Ukrainian Parliament] of the 4th-6th sessions, [Party of Regions faction] Heorhiy Skudar.

Paul Goble, originally on Window on Eurasia

Staunton, May 14 – “Russia is conducting against Ukraine a war of a new type,” one that is so different from military campaigns in the past that it is obvious that Moscow has been preparing for its current actions “for several years,” according to Mihail Koval, who is Ukraine’s acting minister of defense.

Yesterday, Koval said that Moscow’s preparations have been going on “for more than one year.” But he added, those who prepared it did not assume that Ukrainian forces would respond as they have by fulfilling their duty.
