On June 2 in Simferopol “self-defense forces” detained Sergey Mokrushin and Vladlen Melnykov, journalist and producer with the Centre for Journalistic Investigations. After being tortured for several hours, the journalists were taken to the Central District Police Unit where they were reportedly released with no charges brought on them or explanations presented for their detainment.

Also on 2 June, a group of armed men raided the offices of Donbas newspaper and Vecherniy Donetsk in Donetsk. They detained Alexander Bryzh, editor-in-chief and journalist with Donbas newspaper, and Andrey Krivtsun, editor-in-chief of Vecherniy Donetsk newspaper Leonid Lapa. The journalists were threatened and intimidated to change the editorial policy of their newspapers in favour of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. They were released shortly after detention.

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today in Vienna condemned the continued attacks on and mistreatment of members of the media in eastern and southern Ukraine [and Russian-occupied Crimea].

“The hostile media freedom environment in Ukraine remains a grave concern as the attacks on journalists continue,” Mijatović said.

“There is no honour in silencing free and objective voices. I call on all those responsible to stop the vicious practice of harassing the messengers,” Mijatović said.

Are the torturers of journalist pro-russian or pro-ukrainian …these articles are unclear. Are these journalists from Russian or Ukrainian media…you need to make it clear in your stories.

It is clear in the article if you have followed events. It’s not our article, it’s OSCE’s. If you think the Ukrainian government is torturing journalists then you are reading the wrong sources or have not been following events. Crimea is occupied by Russian forces currently so obviously no Ukrainian government would be torturing anyone there as there is no Ukr. gov’t there right now anyway. And the “self-defense forces” have been the Russian occupiers’ cynical misuse of Maidan’s creation of self-defense forces after people were brutally beat, abducted and tortured by Russian spetsnaz and Russian-backed forces there. Simferopol is in Crimea. The self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” are currently run by mercenaries and veterans from Russia and the local pro-Russian insurgents there have been abducting people for ransom for some time now. You will note all abducting and torturing has been from one side only. Please do read some of our other articles and materials. However, your questions do point out a major weakness and oddness in the reporting of OSCE staff who are becoming less and less objective and are themselves blurring the lines while purporting to be objective as they “monitor” the situation in Ukraine. So thank you for bringing this issue, embedded in their text, to the foreground. Regards, VoU Team.
