Handicapped athletes protect Ukraine’s honor
not only in sports competitions…
Dmytro Maksymov, a silver and bronze medalist in Judo at Deaflympic games in Sofia, died on Maidan Nezalezhnosti [Independence Square] on February 18, 2014.
What a terrible death… the 19-year old deaf athlete came to Maidan with a friend who trained with him, and other people who fought for Ukraine… When the shooting began, a grenade ripped off his arm. Someone took him to the Trade Unions House where Dmytro died due to blood loss… His body remained at the Mykhaylivsky Cathedral for a couple of days…
Dmytro Maksymov was a real future hopeful for the national Deaflympic team; during his debut at the 2013 Games in Sophia, he won 2 medals – bronze in individual competition, and silver in team contest.
He was the happiness and promise of his family. Sadly, he is no longer with us.
All of us – the National Committee for handicapped sports of Ukraine, Deaf Sports Federation of Ukraine, athletes and relatives, offer our most sincere condolences in connection with the sudden and tragic death of Dmytro Maksymov. May he rest in peace.
Honor to the Heroes!
