Feb. 20: last night’s truce was broken on Maidan in the center of Kyiv. It is still unclear who fired the first live shots which came from the direction of the Conservatory building behind police lines. Molotov cocktails, grenades were also being thrown by police at the Conservatory. The directions of the shots point to a provocation by government forces as it would be extremely difficult for protesters to take firing positions from that direction.

Since then Berkut snipers have been firing at protesters. Over 30 dead as a result.

14:00 – People in Dnipropetrovsk Throw Themselves in Front of Train to Stop It

Currently, a train of 12 cars, containing specialized equipment and members of the Dnipropetrovsk air portable brigade N25, is waiting for departure at the Orlovschyna station, Dnipropetrovsk oblast.

Approximately TEN PEOPLE are lying down on the tracks, trying to stop the train from leaving. Local police trying to remove them. More activists are arriving, and calling for help.

Titushkas and criminals released from prison in Martusivka, Kyiv oblast, started destruction and marauding in villages near Boryspil highway. They destroyed a kindergarten and a church in Kryvne village, then moved on to Schaslyve village.

Police Forces Turn Into Marauders As Well

Lyudmyla Surgay, chief keeper of the museum funds in the Ukrainian House, informs that on the morning of February 19, the museum employees came to work to find a scene of destruction. Many valuable museum articles have been pilfered, computers and other valuables taken from offices.
Yuriy Levchenko, commandant of the Ukrainian House, believes that the place was used as a changing room for criminals and titushkas. Piles of police uniforms, shoes and shoulder marks of various ranks (sergeant, lieutenant, even lieutenant colonel) were found on the floor. The place is covered in cigarette ends and empty liquor bottles.

14:00 – Shot Medic Updates Status: “I’m Dying”

The last update on the VKontakte [social network] wall of Olesya Zhukovska, aged 20, says simply, ‘I’m dying’:
Olesya’s Wall.

She was shot in the neck by a sniper around noon today.

GOOD NEWS: As of 14:15, we received word from Krystyna Berdynskykh, nurse, that Olesya has been operated on and survived surgery. She is currently in ICU, her condition is severe, but not deteriorating.

Interfax-Ukraine: Head of Kyiv City State Administration Volodymyr Makeyenko has said that he has decided to quit the Regions Party and take personal responsibility for the situation in Kyiv.

“I, Volodymyr Makeyenko, am appealing to you personally, Mr. President, and to the heads of the security forces. The ongoing events in the Ukrainian capital are a tragedy for all Ukrainian people. I responsibly announce that I am ready to do everything possible to stop the bloodshed and fratricide in the heart of Ukraine – on Independence Square. Human life must be the highest value in our country and nothing can contradict this principle,” he said in a statement to the Ukrainian president, which was published on the Web site of the city administration on Thursday afternoon.

“To confirm his words, I have decided to withdraw from the Regions Party and accept personal responsibility for vital functions in Kyiv,” he said.
