Hordes of FSB (Federal Security Bureau of Russia) officers, political strategists, and PR-specialists have arrived in Kyiv.
If, in spite of historically high gas prices, Viktor Yanukovych allowed himself to talk about European integration – what is the guarantee that Ukraine will not return to this conversation after overcoming the current crisis? Where is there an opportunity to pressure a new Ukrainian president or prime minister with a more serene biography than that of Yanukovych?
That is exactly why Russia needs a new weapon against Ukraine – the weapon of territorial split. This is the weapon forged in fire on Hrushevskoho and in firing flashes over the downtown of Ukraine’s capital [Kiev]. It is in order to harden it, the hordes of FSB officers, political strategists, and PR-specialists have arrived in Kyiv. This is why Moscow needs pro-Russian politicians. It is with this purpose that Russia is playing on the ambitions of Ukrainian courtiers and oligarchs.
If a full split of the country doesn’t take place, Moscow would like to control at least two groups of regions – and better, of course, three or four – with different ideological preferences and mutual exclusion. In a country like this, an arbitrator will be, of course, not Yanukovych, but Putin, controlling the interests of the east. And the fact that the main hawks in the current Ukrainian leadership were not leaders of Donetsk and Lugansk regions – which would be quite logical from the point of view of the current consolidation of countrymen around Yanukovych, but extremists from Kharkov – is quite logical.
It is from Kharkov, that we hear appeals to move Ukrainian capital to the city, which nearly a century ago has already served as a springboard for Russian attacks on Ukrainian statehood. It is Kharkov official, who offers to send to Kiev “volunteers ” to help our valiant police, who can on occasion also replace them.
Whoever comes out today with a Ukrainian flag to Maidan should be aware of one simple truth: he is confronted not with Yanukovych, “Berkut” and “titushki,” but Putin with his FSB & the full might of the Russian state machine.
