MAIDAN Events of 19/01/2014, afternoon/evening updates (actively ongoing updates, check back for more)

A brief digest of the current situation in Kyiv:

Clashes between the protesters and the police in downtown Kyiv, tear gas, criminal investigation of unrest has already been opened, the police are using water pumps (it’s -7C or 19F in Kyiv right now), opposition says the violence that is going on is nothing they planned or wanted, AutoMaidan stated they are against bloodshed, Hromadske.tv journalist Dmytro Hnap alleged that opposition leaders are connected to the current government and the channel invited the politicians to come on air to deny such allegations. Police buses burn through the night. The police remind everyone that mass unrest is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. #EuroMaidan: The Self-defense of Euromaidan is standing like a live border between protesters and burning bus.
(Drums are beating)
#EuroMaidan: We can not disagree.
Ihor Lutsenko, “Everything that happened today spontaneously is the opposition’s responsibility. Not to give the protest an adequate release of energy – it will come out the way it comes out.”

Joint statement of Sergiy Poyarkov , Andriy Telizhenko, Dmitro Bulatov.

Friends, a terrible thing has happened today: Automaidan coordinators did not come to a agreement, others called for people to go to Parliament.
We, Dmitro Bulatov, Andriy Telizhenko, and Sergiy Poyarkov, from the beginning opposed unmotivated violence and bloodshed. We did not encourage people to go on Hrushevsky St., we tried to convince other Automaidan members and civilians who joined us not to fall for regime provocations. Therefore, violent confrontation will resolve only in the bloody hands of the government and bring Euromaidan’s reputation in the world community to nothing. We call for urgent action to stop the violence! We do not want to be responsible for the blood spilled today and for ruined destinies.

Earlier on (8pm or so) Klitschko (seemingly suffering aftereffects of tear gas) addressed Yanukovitch in a video calling on him to stop sending police against demonstrators, to understand that the only way this crisis will be resolved is by having early elections and asked the president to have the courage to not follow in the footsteps of Qaddafi and Ceausescu. Klitschko2

Aronets:
To Mezhyhirya arrived about 300 machines with Automaidanists in them to conduct a “round table” [with the president]  🙂

Klitschko went to Mezhyhirya to persuade Yanukovych to backdown: “Find the courage.”
The opposition leader of “Udar”, Vitali Klitschko recorded a video message to the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych and with a group of parlamentaries went to Mezhyhirya.
This was announced by the the political force’s press office, reports Tsenzor.NET .

“I appeal to Viktor Yanukovych: you are fighting against your own people! Stop escalation of the situation. Do not incite the police and special units against the people. Stop the war against the citizens of Ukraine, who during the past two months have required you to hear their demands,” – said Klitschko.

Lesya Orobets, MP Ukrainian Parliament
Status Update: January 19, 2014  8:10pm Kyiv

War finally started. For no laws now apply.

An hour ago I filmed on a mobile phone the distribution of grenades to herd of “Berkut” special forces riot police, with 20 heads or more. These grenades are these, I remember, they immediately throw en masse into Ukrainian citizens and cause severe shrapnel wounds, although for Pshonka and Lutkovska they are “flash bang.”

I went to Horshevskoho by the Council. They knew knew who I was. I did not attack anyone, stood in the open with the phone. I was attacked by a flock of at least five burly Berkut officers in masks and armor, beat my legs and knocked me down, I fell on the pavement and hit my head hard, the helmet saved me.

Three of my defenders – they beat these men brutally in the head and to the body, from more serious injuries the helmets and hats saved them. The phone was knocked from my hand, they broke it and took it away. To my cries of, “Why did you beat me, I did not do anything to you” with hideous snickers they said, “But we are not beating you, we are pushing you away.”

Conclusions:
– It’s already a full-scale war. No need to pretend about the courts, prosecutors, elections and more.

– In Vradiyivka [last summer] cops realized this and they put their own. Vradiyivka – is the minimally soft format that Yanukovych and his organized criminal group understood.

– The renegades of the Interior Ministry received a full “go-ahead” to use any methods to protect dictatorship.

– Without an opposition leader the protest resistance has high chances of drowning in blood, and the state – in dictatorship.

It seems a number of peaceful protesters have formed a line between the radicals and the police line. Some are trying to talk to the police to convince them to join the demonstrators and bring down the regime. It is reported that Arseniy Yatseniuk was among them, also trying to calm the more radically disposed demonstrators, but like Klitchko he was booed.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE is my LEGAL RIGHT.
I do not recognize “laws” that were created unlawfully. I will never recognize them.
I do not agree with the current regime. I will never agree with them.
The regime ignores the will of the people and I will ignore the regime that stands against the people and its illegal “shenanigans” in Parliament.

This regime thinks nothing of the people, but money represents everything for the regime.
The best approach is to institute sanctions in regards to their personal fortunes in Ukraine and abroad.
Ukrainian citizens will institute sanctions within Ukraine.
Sanctions abroad can be imposed by democratic governments of civilized countries across the globe.
There are plenty of examples of the effectiveness of sanctions used in history including sanctions used on our own Pavlo Lazarenko.”..

I think Europe will never understand our problems. Here’s EU ambassador Tombinsky urging protesters not to aggravate the situation, and that you can decide everything with political means.

At the moment, I, intolerantly, was glad that in Europe they have problems with gays and Arabs.
Moderate and tolerant Europe itself largely contributed to the situation when it deferred sanctions against Ukrainian officials.

And so, once again, you become convinced that it’s every man for himself.

It’s too bad that today they were burning Berkut buses, and not palaces of the officials.
Even if it is a provocation.
Desperation has no limits.

Just got back from the hospital, a grenade wounded my friend Janek, they operated on his wounded eyes, chin and leg, he was on the crew of #Spilno.tv on Horoshevskoho St. His orange vest and helmet – with PRESS on it did not help. Apart from him, in the last few hours a few other journalists also received injuries, ICTV is in serious condition, VESTY, and a few names I can’t remember. All injured by grenades and bullets (rubber, plastic). All were injured by state security forces, and, on impression, specifically focused on the press. All the injured have special vests and were concentrated in one place.

Kiev’s medical authorities said 112 people were given first aid treatment for injuries on Saturday, 42 of whom were kept in hospital. Police said 100 officers had been injured in the violence during the day.

An online TV station, called Public TV, on Sunday listed 29 journalists, mainly cameramen and photographers, who had suffered at the hands of police while covering the weekend events in Kiev.

At least 12 of these had been beaten by riot police. Those hurt included a Reuters cameraman who was beaten on the arms and whose camera was destroyed.

Yes, there were again provocateurs, not without this. Again, and chants grew. “Ultras.” BUT!! IF KLITSCHKO HAD NOT DISPERSED THE CROWD, and shouted to himself, then those provocateurs (10 people) would have been swallowed up in a crowd of 100,000. And then they would not have used water cannons and grenades. Them against such a crowd doesn’t apply. And now the leaders have distanced themselves, provocateurs – ran away a long time ago, and the cops and the people stand facing each other, and without leaders.

Euromaidan 2014 (status update)

To those near headquarters.

History teaches that when the Germans wanted to attack the Poles in 1939, they did so despite the lack of provocation on behalf of the Poles. The wave of repression (mainly economic) will still roll on Tuesday, with or without provocation. Our task is to create an efficient resistance system to this repression.

1) The activity of the so-called “Right Sector” proved ineffective. Slightly disorganized ruffian actions, but no problem has been resolved. If they would mark by their presence the homes of the Regions’ [Party members], that would have made more sense, and this was to have been done by them as early as Jan. 15. If you want to make a breakthrough, then do it and do not behave like primitive ultras from a village football team. And by the way, a self-respecting soldier does not beat captives. I can tell from experience, that such people usually need diapers when there’s a confrontation brewing.

2) If the opposition wanted to lead this boiling mass they should have understood that people were not willing to act as a dance accompaniment for a meeting of losers who lost everything that was possible. The hero in Jack London’s “Sea-Wolf” was depicted as a symbol of good yeast, which should offer a way out. People need effective action. If you cannot suggest options – step aside and don’t get in the way.

3) We need a parallel system of government to be set up on Maidan with an open path. It must be legitimized in the eyes of citizens (through agitation), global community (through informing) and discourage powerful supporters of the regime (any potential threat and through negotiations). This government should solve the issues which the current one is not able to tackle (providing protection from “titushkas”, for instance).

4) At the key moment (which is sure to come since Yanukovych is more likely to ask Putin for a nuclear bomb to be dropped on Kyiv rather than back down) representatives of the new government (or People’s Council – the name is not important) in charge of resistance will organize seizure of all the command lines (financial, administrative, legal) by protesters. But they should do it carefully and according to plans.

5) Any scenario requires sacrifices and these will take place. We need to choose the most effective one and not to repeat an assault on Kyiv, like in 1943, or a defense of the city, like in 1941.

Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on Ukraine

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 19, 2014

We are deeply concerned by the violence taking place today on the streets of Kyiv and urge all sides to immediately de-escalate the situation. The increasing tension in Ukraine is a direct consequence of the government failing to acknowledge the legitimate grievances of its people. Instead, it has moved to weaken the foundations of Ukraine’s democracy by criminalizing peaceful protest and stripping civil society and political opponents of key democratic protections under the law.  We urge the Government of Ukraine to take steps that represent a better way forward for Ukraine, including repeal of the anti-democratic legislation signed into law in recent days, withdrawing the riot police from downtown Kyiv, and beginning a dialogue with the political opposition.  From its first days, the Maidan movement has been defined by a spirit of non-violence and we support today’s call by opposition political leaders to reestablish that principle. The U.S. will continue to consider additional steps — including sanctions — in response to the use of violence.

Well, what if. Everything still continues, but we can summarize. Police became more restrained and professional, this is positive.
From the opposition on Hrushevskoho were Klitschko, Yaworiwski and Lyashko.
Picture terrible disorder.
If the government and the opposition will continue in the same vein – it will only get worse.
Talk about provocateurs and power scenarios and a state of emergency – stupid. Nothing holds this power back. Is this not clear to someone?
All fighters and provocateurs please get out of my druzav . To fight is necessary with others.
