Vitaly Mandrik

Yesterday in Mariupol, at the cost of [the life of] a police officer from the ‘Sokil’ [Falcon] special forces subdivision [of HUBOZ], an act of terrorism was averted.

A car with tinted windows was stopped at a checkpoint. After the [driver was] required to produce documents and exit the car for inspection, there were muffled shots from a pistol silencer that came from the interior.

The shooter was a professional. Three shots and three hits to the head of the police employees.

One of the ‘Sokil’ officers, who later died in the hospital, fell unconscious at the site of this terrorist act. The other two policemen, despite wounds to the jaw and cheek, painfully opened fire on the car and continued pursuit of the terrorists, killing one of them.

Pursuit of the second [terrorist] was terminated due to the significant loss of blood and loss of consciousness in one of the two wounded policemen.

To intercept the terrorists, an alarm was raised in the Mariupol militia garrison.

Explosives and detonator sets were found in the car abandoned by the terrorists.

This is the second in 2 days a policeman has died at the forefront of the fight against terrorism.

The deceased policeman is Vitaly Mandrik. He was a native of Donetsk Oblast. He was 27 years old.

Prior to its capture by Donetsk terrorists [the so-called ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’], he served in the Donetsk ‘Sokil.’ He remained faithful to the oath of allegiance to the people of Ukraine. He left [Donetsk] on his own, bringing his wife and one-year-old child from Donetsk.

He lived in a rented apartment on the outskirts of Mariupol on his modest police salary.

He performed combat missions at the front lines in Debaltseve, Mariinka, Pisky.

Today I want, once again, to appeal to the entire Facebook community and to call for an end to the opposition of police in society, and to hanging of labels of thieves and extortionists on the police.

Yes, some villains in the police have remained and they are not few. But overall, the vector of reforming the police chosen by Arsen Avakov is right!

Only brave people, ready to stop criminals and prevent a terrorist act with their lives and health, will remain in the police.

I also want to ask everyone who reads me, please explain to all your friends and acquaintances that when passing through the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] police checkpoint, especially in the ATO [anti-terrorism operation zone], it’s not necessary to engage in verbal battles with police officers on the subject – to put your documents in their hands or show them at a distance, to refuse to have them carry out inspections on vehicles on the grounds that you heard some wise guy say on TV that screening should only be in the presence of an investigator and two witnesses.

You need only to politely bring your documents and immediately comply with all the requirements of police officers aimed at the inspection of your vehicle and verifying your identity.

And even if you have a “Press” sticker stuck on your car and you have press credentials and a video camera with you, it does not give you the right not to undergo a vehicle inspection.

There are no police “Mielofons” like in Alice Selezneva and Koli Gerasimov. They do not know what you have in mind. Whether you are a famous Ukrainian journalist or human rights defender. Or if you are a terrorist taught in special forces school in Russia, where you were taught to pass through Ukrainian militia checkpoints rudely attacking policemen wagging your mustache.

I am preparing a proposal to the Minister of the Ministry of Interior about consciously rigid instructions for the actions of police officers to stop, check documents, and examine the contents of the trunk and passenger compartments of vehicles.

You will not like all of my proposal, but I will offer instruction for how to proceed through a checkpoint, the right guarding of checkpoints, of keeping the car when coming into a checkpoint at “gunpoint,” until one has passed the document check and vehicle inspection.

This is the only way we can reduce the risk of police officer deaths and military personnel who are deployed for the protection of checkpoints and the inspection of vehicle transports leaving Mordor.

In the photo – police officer Vitaly Mandrik died yesterday, who gave his life to stop the terrorists and prevent another terrorist act in Mariupol.

Operational data from Information Resistance:

Over the last twenty-four hours, massive shelling continued on Ukrainian troop positions and civilian targets in the area of Shyrokyne. Russian-terrorist troops made two attempts to break through the defense lines of Ukrainian units; the attempted assaults were supported by armored vehicles (including at least 6 tanks). The enemy also delivered massive MRLS and cannon artillery fire around the settlements of Oktyabr and Zaichenko. The enemy is pulling up armored vehicles in the Novoazovsk sector (four tanks were spotted moving along the T0508 motorway).

After the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Debaltseve springboard, Russian-terrorist troops continue attempting an offensive in this area. In particular, two Russian-terrorist tactical groups (each one up to a reinforced company in strength, and supported by 5 units of combat equipment) attempted to attach the front positions of Ukrainian troops in the area of the Luhanske – Svitlodarsk separation line. These groups were supported by a terrorist mortar unit. Ukrainian units fired on the enemy groups, forcing them to stop and retreat to their initial lines.

Firefights between individual ‘DNR’ [Donetsk People’s Republic] and ‘LNR’ [Luhansk People’s Republic] gangs are taking place in the area of Debaltseve.

The terrorists continue shelling the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, purposefully striving to shut the plant down (part of this facility has already stopped operations).

On the Yasynuvata – Panteleimonivka stretch, the enemy continues concentrating a tactical strike group (at least 35 armored vehicles spread out in groups of 5-7 units). This area is also expecting arrival of mortar units and the artillery group (in part or in full) from Yenakijeve. The artillery group in question, which had supported the “Horlivka DNR Brigade” during the Debaltseve offensive, includes 26 units of cannon artillery and self-propelled guns, and five multiple rocket launcher systems.

The concentration of Russian-terrorist combat formations continues on the Stepne – Dokuchajevsk stretch. However, the enemy’s heavy armaments in this area currently remain withdrawn deeper behind the lines, and the Russian-artillery group deployed in this area does not open fire at this time. In this area, the enemy is using mortars and small arms, and scouting out the positions of Ukrainian troops, including through aerial reconnaissance (we observe 12-15 Russian-terrorist drone flights per day in this sector).

In the territory controlled by the ‘LNR’ [Luhansk People’s Republic], the Russian-terrorist command continues presenting a picture of the “withdrawal of heavy armaments.” In reality, the combat equipment is only being slightly withdrawn from the front line and concentrated in many well-camouflaged “storages.” Civilian settlements (with private housing) are primarily used for this purpose.

A transfer point of Russian-terrorist troops has been set up south of Luhansk. Equipment and armaments arriving from Russia are being transported here; as is some of the heavy weaponry withdrawn from the front line.

Shipments of supplies, equipment and ammunition from Russia to Donbas continue. Over the last twenty-four hours, we observed at least three supply convoys, one of which (consisting of 22 vehicles) proceeded to Donetsk.

The share of various models of T-72 tanks is increasing among the heavy weaponry being transported from Russia to Donbas. Such tanks are not in the service of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (previously, Russians mainly transferred various models of T-64 tanks, also employed by the Ukrainian army).

Photo: A comparison of T-62 and T-72 tank models. Despite the similarities in the two tanks’ silhouettes, T-72 has larger, characteristically shaped wheels and a number of other differences visible upon inspection.

Operational data from Information Resistance:

Over the past weekend (February 21-22, 2015), Russian-terrorist forces continued to flagrantly violate the ceasefire agreements in the conflict zone in Donbas by attacking the positions of Ukrainian troops (including with the use of heavy weaponry), attempting to mount an offensive, and regrouping their troops.

The most complicated situation is unfolding in the seaside (Mariupol) sector. The enemy, among other things, continues transferring tactical reserves to the area of Bezimenne. Over the past 24 hours, [the enemy] transferred approximately 350 personnel, 15 cargo vehicles, and some 20 armored vehicles (including 6 tanks). These reserves are deployed on a narrow section in the area between the coast and the T0519 motorway.

Meanwhile, a supporting artillery group of the enemy is [currently] shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops in the area of Shyrokyne. The artillery group consists of four firing units (two employing cannon artillery, one operating MLRS, and one using a self-propelled artillery units). The enemy also attempted several tank attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops. We also observed enemy aerial reconnaissance activity (using drones).

Ukrainian troops continue to hold a section of the front that includes a springboard in the area of Svitlodarsk and Luhanske [settlement in the Donetsk oblast; not to be confused with the city of Luhansk]. The enemy fires at positions of Ukrainian troops in the area periodically, but the bulk of the formations which took part in the battle for Debaltseve have been pulled back for resupply.

Additionally, [the enemy continues] shelling and attempts to engage [Ukrainian troops] in a close battle on the KrasnohorivkaAvdiivka stretch. Two Russian-terrorist roving mortar batteries were spotted in the western sector near Mariinka.

South of Donetsk, on the StepneHranynte stretch, the enemy continues consolidating their combat formations and bringing in reinforcements to create a strike tactical group. According to our reports, three large supply convoys arrived in this area over the last 48 hours – a total of up to 40 trucks; 24 pieces of combat equipment (including eight self-propelled artillery guns (2S1 Gvordika [“Carnation”] and 2S3 Akatsiya [“Acacia”]) employed by two firing units; as well as 5 tanks, 7 ACVs, and specialized vehicles, including command and staff vehicles (CSVs), and a mobile reconnaissance and command unit for tactical air defense).

As of 06.00 on 02.23.2015, a Russian-terrorist artillery group remained active in the area of Dokuchajevsk. Despite the terrorist command’s claims of being ready to pull the heavy armaments back, the positions of this artillery group are being reinforced, and active supply of ammunition is underway.

The enemy continues accumulating forces and equipment in Donetsk (Petrovskyi and Kuibyshev districts). A number of “DNR” [Donetsk People’s Republic] gangs that took part in battles on the Debaltseve springboard returned to the city. In order to restore the combat ability of these gangs, they are being resupplied with personnel and weapons upon their arrival in Donetsk. To this end, a minimum of two large convoys carrying personnel and armaments is expected to arrive in Donetsk on February 23-24.

A tactical group of Russian-terrorist forces is concentrating in the area of Yasynuvata. This group includes a minimum of 30 armored vehicles (including at least 12 tanks).

Another special train carrying ammunition for “DNR” gangs was reported arriving in Ilovaisk from Russia.

The enemy continues active efforts to restore the combat ability of Russian-terrorist troops on the Alchevsk – Stakhanov stretch. For this purpose, considerable additional reserves are being transferred through Krasnodon and Krasnyi Luch. We have reports of 35 motor vehicles and 22 units of combat equipment; additionally, two D-30 howitzer batteries have been transferred to this area.
