Operational data from Information Resistance:

In addition to the active shelling, Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas continue scouting out the ATO forces’ combat lines in their tactical and operational-tactical rear. To this end, in addition to other means of reconnaissance, militants are increasingly often sending civilians across the demarcation line, interrogating them after their return to the occupied territory. Interrogations are particularly large-scale among the residents of Horlivka, Yasynuvata, and the Petrovskiy district of Donetsk – de facto, the personnel and equipment composition of Ukrainian troops and their defense systems have been revealed [to the enemy] through local residents.

During the past 24 hours, the most intense terrorist shellings and armed clashes were observed near the Yasynuvata junction. Militants transferred reinforcements to this area from the southern direction of operations and from the direction of Kruta Balka (up to one motorized rifle company and one tank platoon). Following this reinforcement, militants persist in their attempts to push Ukrainian troops further east, towards Avdiivka, by carrying out heavy fire raids (82 mm and 120 mm mortars) and operating with small infantry groups supported by fire from armored vehicles. Namely, enemy infantry groups operated from the direction of the Yasunuvata junction, the 251.2 m high ground, and the terrorist stronghold north of that high ground. As a result of a violent clash, the ATO forces held their ground.

Another clash was recorded in the vicinity of Pisky and the DAP-Spartak area. In both cases, militants actively deployed 120 mm mortars and operated in small infantry groups. In the Petrovskyi district of Donetsk, several residential blocks were cut off from power due to terrorists’ armed provocations.

Terrorists deployed artillery in the area of Zaitseve, firing 122 mm guns at the ATO forces’ positions west and northwest of the town. Militant artillery positions were located near the Mayorskiy automobile market.

In the Donetsk area (near the Donetsk Bypass north of the Kalmius station), according to our preliminary data, BM-21 “Grad” MLRS ammunition detonated while being transported aboard vehicles. Militant personnel deaths are reported.

Militant advanced units in the vicinity of Yasynuvata are receiving reinforcements: during the past 48 hours, several small infantry groups with armored vehicles were transferred here. In total, up to 20 various ACVs and at least 7 tanks are concentrated in this area. A militant artillery unit with six 2S1 “Gvozdika” 122 mm self-propelled guns was again identified beyond Panteleimonivka.

In Horlivka, militants are rotating the units in their “garrison” – several terrorist groups arrived here, up to a battalion in total strength. The bulk of these reinforcements arrived from the southern direction of operations, mainly aboard motor vehicles. Some of the personnel is arriving from the direction of Donetsk.

In Donetsk, the “DNR” military command held a meeting to sum up the results of the inspection carried out by the “commission of the DNR MoD” in the 9th separate motorized infantry regiment of the “1st DNR Army Corps,” stationed in the coastal regions, near Novoazovsk (see IR group’s yesterday comment). The state of equipment of the regiment’s advanced position was declared “unsatisfactory;” the state of militant defense lines in the vicinity of Sakhanka received particularly harsh criticism. The “commission” also noted a “very low discipline level among the personnel” in the units.

In Makiivka and the Kyivskyi district of Donetsk, incidence rates are high for “criminal acts” against “military servicemen of the DNR army.” These are mainly cases of robbery and assault, and the victims are militants with income levels considered high by local standards. The “DNR law enforcement officials” note that such crimes against militants involve the use of force and are often “excessively violent.”

The “DNR Ministry of Internal Affairs” is conducting large-scale searches in the units of the “Vostok” armed gang (controlled by Alexander Khodakovsky), looking for “illegal” weapons, vehicles, hostages, and any assets noted as missing. Representatives of the “DNR MIA” have been instructed that if “Vostok” militants are detained for various offences, they are to be actively involved in “correctional labor” on the territory of the destroyed Donetsk airport (clearing out rubble, etc.)

“LNR” militants are actively reequipping the artillery brigade of the “LNR 2nd Army Corps” and strengthening motorized rifle infantry brigades from the same unit. The artillery brigade is holding “specialist exercises” (including for artillery spotters and forward observers) and actively training in the use of new weapons and equipment received from Russia, including artillery reconnaissance equipment.

Copy to my attorneys M. Feygin, N. Polozov, I. Novikov

Statement

I, Savchenko Nadezhda [Nadiya] Viktorovna, citizen of Ukraine, declare a dry hunger strike starting from March 4, 2016 and until my return to Ukraine – alive or dead!

This dry hunger strike is my protest against the actions of the Russian authorities and special services, against the investigation, court, and prosecutor’s office of the Russian Federation, and against the the fact that they are trying to conceal their crimes.

They are guilty of violating international law, of kidnapping me from Ukraine, bringing me to Russia by force, illegally detaining me in Russian prisons, and subjecting me to a false, dishonorable trial!

I forbid [any action] to bring me out of the hunger strike, whether in prison or anywhere else in Russia.

I refuse all and any medical tests, and will not be forced to take any medications. I forbid Russian doctors and prison officials from touching me.

I will only agree to a medical examination if it’s conducted by doctors from Ukraine or Europe.

I refuse to be moved anywhere from my cell or transferred anywhere without an explanation of the purpose of such transfer and its destination.

Any use of physical force against me I will view as torture, and will resist it.

If I am alive on March 9, 2016, I demand to be taken to the court session.

In the event of my death, I forbid an autopsy and demand that my body is returned, whole, to my mother and my sister.

My decision is final and will remain unchanged.

March 4, 2016
(signed)
Nadiya Savchenko

“Freedom is priceless!

In Russia, I don’t trust anyone! I don’t fear! I don’t beg!

This is my final word!

With Ukraine in my heart,

Nadiya Savchenko”

Echoes of the “Russian World” – Kharkiv Two Years Later

By IT Sector
Posted on 03.01.2016
Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

Two years ago marks the first storming of the Kharkiv Oblast [Regional] State Administration (HOGA).

March 1, 2014 is a day remembered by many. It was then that the Federation Council [of Russia], due to “the extraordinary situation” and “the threat to the lives of citizens of the Russian Federation,” unanimously voted to give Putin the authority to use Russian armed forces on the territory of Ukraine. Back then, many were completely seriously discussing the prospect of a full-scale Russian invasion along the entire length of the Ukrainian land border. But residents of Kharkiv remember that day for one more reason. It was on that day that pro-Russian activists, riled by the emotional speech of [Hennadiy] Kernes [Mayor of Kharkiv] and supported by “visiting performers” from Belgorod, Rostov, Voronezh, and Moscow, stormed the building of the Kharkiv Oblast Administration (HOGA). The building was full of Kharkiv’s Euromaidan activists…

But let’s rewind a little. On February 22, after a 40-thousand-strong pro-Ukrainian march passed through the city, the representatives of Euromaidan, with the consent of the regional government, took over the first floor of the HOGA building. The next day, an Antimaidan camp started to appear opposite [the building]. Soon, Hennadiy Kernes and Mykhailo Dobkin [then Governor of the Kharkiv Oblast] returned to Kharkiv (either from Chechnya or from Switzerland) and decided to take command of this action. Today’s most patriotic of patriots, back then Hennadiy Adolfovych [Kernes], did not hesitate to stand under Soviet and Russian banners, advocating for federalization and the right of self-determination for the regions. At that time, the “little green men” [Russian military servicemen] were already openly operating in Crimea, and Donetsk and Luhansk were witnessing the beginnings of pro-separatist hysteria. It seemed that any time now, our strongman mayor would announce “the constitution of the KNR (Kharkov People’s Republic)” from the stage and, with the approving roar of the mob, bring the “Russian world” into Kharkiv.

On March 1, this scenario seemed more real than ever. When the assault began, the attackers were coordinated and knew their way around the building and the back yard of the regional administration. Stones and sticks were flying,  there were sounds of (pneumatic?) gunfire. The police stood aside. Only some law enforcement officers were helping to evacuate the civilians. As it later turned out, [they were doing that] at their own personal risk. They had been ordered not to interfere, under threat of dismissal. When the “supporters of federalization” broke into the building, they ransacked it. They spared no aggression for their opponents – men were beaten indiscriminately. They were a little softer on the women, but still did not stand on ceremony. After taking full control of the HOGA, the invaders set up a “corridor of shame” through which they led out the remaining activists onto the stage for public humiliation. The people who were led through the corridor received a generous measure of kicks, spitting, and insults. There was also a highly peculiar case of exorcism, by way of being beaten over the head with a religious icon. The “Russian world” demonstrated to the Kharkiv citizens the full strength of its “spiritual bonds.”

12814213_1114017205283818_5371236387956410860_n

One of the leaders of Maidan in Kharkiv, the writer Serhiy Zhadan, had to be hospitalised, as were many others. To ensure the safety of the victims, activists had to organize guard duty by the hospital wards. There were many attempts to take the victims from the hospitals. The reports of abductions of Maidan activists from Kyiv medical facilities were still fresh in our memories, and we could not allow this to happen in Kharkiv.

On March 1 [2014], many of us felt truly afraid for the first time. Not of being spat at or insulted, of sticks and stones, or batons or pneumatic rifles. Maidan taught us not to fear trifles like that. We were afraid of tanks on our Constitution Square, and of artillery shells landing in the yards of Saltivka [district]. We were afraid of one day waking up in the KNR.

That day marked the start of a confrontation that would decide whether Kharkiv would become part of “Novorossiya” and the “Russian world.” The city stood its ground, and March 1, 2014 has already become part of history. A history that is being written before our very eyes. And we must remember it, so that our city is never again under threat of separatism, war, and [of becoming] a “people’s republic.”

Nadiya Savchenko’s unspoken “final word” in court March 3, 2016 #FreeSavchenko

By Nadiya Savchenko, posted on Facebook by her sister Vira Savchenko

Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

Editor’s note: This is a translation of Nadiya Savchenko’s handwritten “Final Word” which is allowed her in court on the last day of her trial but which she was not allowed to say today as the judge abruptly stopped the court proceedings just as she began and stated they would reconvene on March 9th, then ran out of the courtroom. Her sister, Vira Savchenko, posted this (in Ukrainian and Russian) on her own Facebook page.

“The final word:

I do not recognize my guilt, nor the verdict, nor the Russian court. In the event of a conviction – there will not be an appeal. I want the whole civilized, democratic world to understand that Russia – is a third-world country with a totalitarian regime, ruled by a petty dictator, a country that spits on human rights and international law.

It is an absurd situation, when those who kidnap people and subject them to torture – then pretend that they have the right to judge them. What kind of a fair trial is there to talk about? In Russia, there is neither a trial nor an investigation! There is only a farce of Kremlin puppets, and I consider participation in it to be an absolute waste of my time and life!

Therefore, there will be no appeal. Here is what will happen: after the verdict, I will continue the hunger strike for another ten days until the verdict comes into effect. This includes the time required to translate it into Ukrainian, because they’re very good at dragging time out with translations. After ten days, I will declare a dry hunger strike and then Russia will have no more than ten days to take me back to Ukraine, from where they kidnapped me! And I do not care how they will justify it. I heard that [President] Petro Poroshenko is a fairly skilled diplomat. Well, I hope that his diplomatic skills will be enough to come to an agreement with one idiot in Russia… After all, he promised my mother that I would be home for the May holidays in 2015.

And while they bargain over me, life will be leaving me, and one way or another, Russia will still have to return me to Ukraine – living or dead! But it will return me!

And for all these ten days, my sister will stand by the prison gates, day and night, and wait – whether they release me or carry me out. And if you imprison her – my 77-year-old mother will come to stand in her place. Will you imprison her too? Then in her place will stand my girlfriend, then another friend, followed by Ukrainian after Ukrainian! And remember – you can’t lock them all up! And while my fellow citizens stand there, simple, honest and decent Russians from the neighboring houses will start bringing them hot tea, sandwiches and blankets – for each of them understands that any child of theirs can wind up in my place in this Prison of the Peoples that goes by the name of Russia!

And this is how Maidans begin! Do you need this?! You are afraid of this like fire! So it’s better for the Kremlin to take me back to Ukraine as soon as possible, and alive!

And the world of democratic values would do good to understand the lessons of history and remember that at one time Europe was tolerant with Hitler, America was not decisive enough, and it led to World War II. Putin is a tyrant with imperial aspiration, and the personality complexes of Napoleon and Hitler put together. A bear does not understand the human language, it understands only the language of force. Therefore, if we do not become more resolute and don’t define our priorities in a timely manner, we will soon have a third world war.

As a politician, I will not shake hands with Russia in the political arena. It is out of hand to shake hands with those who held you in handcuffs, and your people in chains. Whenever I make a political decision, I will always think about its effect on the common people, of Ukraine as well as Russia. For in Russia, in spite of everything, there are nevertheless many honest, decent, kind and unfortunate people.

“You have no right to try me!” – Nadiya Savchenko’s closing argument in court, March 2, 2016 #FreeSavchenko

By Nadiya Savchenko, posted on Facebook by her sister Vira Savchenko
Posted on 03.02.2016
Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

Editor’s note: Voices of Ukraine translated Nadiya Savchenko’s “Arguments” notes and then added to them from what she actually said in court from sources listed at the end of the article.

“Arguments:

Over these six months of lengthy and tedious trials, we found that this court process has indeed proven some guilt:

1) The guilt of the [two] Russian journalists [Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin]. They are guilty of lying, of deceptive and distorted coverage of events in Ukraine, as well as in the world and in Russia. They are also guilty of disregarding safety rules while in the combat zone, for the sake of career fame. Had they been wearing flak jackets and helmets, and had they not gone where they weren’t supposed to, they would still be alive.

2) The guilt of Russian TV Channels, their directors and owners – who, for the sake of hot footage, ratings and profit, shamelessly send their correspondents to their deaths. Without proper training or accreditation. They didn’t give a damn about their journalists. The most guilt for the deaths of Voloshyn and Kornelyuk lies with their very management.

We saw a video where some anchor was saying that the Ukrainian media lies, and that Russian journalists Voloshyn and Kornelyuk had helmets and flak jackets. Even this court proved that they were wearing neither. Russian TV channels keep lying.

3) The guilt of pro-Russian separatists and Russian troops. They are guilty of killing Ukrainians, occupying Ukrainian lands in Russia’s undeclared, vile and insidious war against Ukraine. And no matter how some “peaceful residents of Donbas,” victims, and, indeed, separatists, squeal that they are being killed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the video furnished by Yegor Russky – incidentally, a Russian citizen! – clearly shows that it is separatists who are killing and finishing off Ukrainian soldiers.

4) This trial also proved the guilt of the Investigative Committee of Russia (SK RF), the Federal Security Bureau of Russia (FSB), and specifically, investigator Manshyn. They are guilty of kidnapping, illegal detention, of torturing people, of fabricating case materials, expert opinions and evidence, and of training lying witnesses. Proof of that can be seen in the 40 nonsensically slapped together volumes of the ludicrous case against me.

5) The guilt of Russian prosecutors and judges. They are guilty of contempt of the law, justice and international law, of their one-sided, a priori accusatory court process and the dishonest examination of the case, and also of political corruption under the rule of the Russian government. They spit on international law and human rights. They’ve received the state order from the Kremlin, and they are following it to the letter.

6) This trial proved the guilt of the Russian authorities. They are guilty of imperial-terrorist acts, political tricks and decisions directed against Ukraine, Ukrainians and the entire civilized democratic world! Their guilt is demonstrated by the occupation of Crimea, unleashing a war in Donbas, the genocide of the Ukrainian people in these regions, and their numerous military and political interference in many countries in the world. They are invading everywhere, committing genocide of indigenous populations and trying to impose a totalitarian regime under Russian domination.

This happened in Chechnya and Abkhazia, and now we’re seeing this in Ukraine, Dagestan, and Syria. Russia’s politics and state interests are placed higher than human lives – specifically, the lives of the people indigenous to the lands that correspond to those state interests.

7) The one thing not proven in this given court trial was my guilt! Because I’m an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and I was defending my people and my homeland, as per the oath I had sworn to my people. I had the full right to do that! I was carrying out my duty! You are not trying your veterans of the Great Patriotic War for defending their Fatherland from invaders, regardless of how many people they killed. Thus, you have no right to try me!

The prosecutor’s office had the audacity to state that I have inflated self-esteem, according to their expert opinion – to that, I’d like to say: the more I encounter such effeminate men like the prosecutors and investigator Manshyn, the higher is my self-esteem as a woman, a soldier, and a human being.

I don’t know how long this whole act is going to continue, but I want to say this right away: if there’s going to be a repeat of the situation with the prosecutors, when they requested three weeks for debates, then I have an immediate defense mechanism against that. Starting tomorrow, I start a dry hunger strike. So if the court takes more than two weeks to pass the verdict, which has already been dictated from above, then you will have to announce my verdict without me, posthumously.

I don’t see the need to wait for any exchange. If you want to resolve this case politically, and get back two guilty GRU officers at the price of one innocent person – that’s too much. You should have exchanged [Oleh] Sentsov and [Olexander] Kolchenko for the GRU officers. I am not a bargaining chip! I am an innocent person, my guilt has not been and cannot be proven. So I will not wait for any exchanges, bargaining, or other plays for time.

And, most importantly. Please, just let the prosecutors have as much as they’re asking. Not a day more, not a day less. All 23 [years]. Don’t ask for more or for less, don’t give them time for some appeals and, again, more plays for time. You have already proven you are capable of nothing. You have already proven how Russia can disgrace itself – on the example of one person. You have not broken me, and will never break me. So let’s wrap all this up as quickly as possible, I won’t wait any longer.

You did not give me my life, you do not control my fate, and it is not up to you to decide it! If it takes more than two weeks, I won’t wait for your verdict. That is all.”
