The sleep of reason in Russian propaganda: 5 examples of lies about Ukraine

Russian funds for mass disinformation continue to float the public a flood of lies about Ukraine. What seems ridiculous to a normal person provokes hatred against Ukraine in a significant number of Russians. It should seem – that after the crucifixion of a boy, and removing people from trains and sending them to the National Guard – that it would be difficult to come up with something more delusional. But for followers of Kiselev, nothing is impossible.

A National Guard tank fell into Yatsenyuk’s ditch

Russian TV channel NTV described how a Ukrainian National Guard tank fell into a ditch on the border with Russia, which had been allegedly dug as a part of the government project “The Wall” to prevent the infiltration of Russian troops into Ukraine.

The Truth: It really is a tank. All the rest that the NTV propagandists say about it – is a lie. In the photo, it is not a National Guard tank, but a tank of the 28th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And it hasn’t fallen into a ditch on the border, but has gone down into a ditch near the settlement of Pisky (near the Donetsk airport). This ditch cannot have any connection with the “The Wall” project, because [from here] there are hundreds of kilometers to the Russian border. And if somebody finds the mere fact of Ukrainian equipment landing in ditches to be funny, we suggest you watch this video. [Russian “Tiger” vehicle, analogue of the “Hammer” cannot drive over a curb].

The author of the photo of the Ukrainian tank is Ukrainian journalist Roman Bochkala [Inter TV channel]. Here is what he wrote, having seen the report of the Russian propagandists:

Roman Bochkala: “NTV — you are shameless and miserable liars. I cannot call you colleagues. Do you have any conscience? How can you lie so vulgarly… Although to whom am I appealing?

I took a photo of our tank, which has gone [driven] down into a ditch. It happened near Pisky in the area of the Donetsk airport. But NTV says that, “according to media reports,” it is “entirely possible” this incident took place on the border with Russia. The ditch was supposedly dug as part of the “Wall” project. We have ourselves allegedly fallen in a pit which [was] dug for others. Ukrainians have allegedly outsmarted themselves…

And one more thing, gentlemen propagandists, this tank has nothing to do with the National Guard, whom you demonize. This is the 28th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Witnesses to that are Oleksandr Klymenko, Vladimir Dedov and Yuliia Tolmacheva.”

The National Guard, with syringes, turned a boy into a target

After the Russian propagandists’ fake about the crucified boy in Slovyansk, it would seem that the Kremlin would leave the subject of children alone for a while. But NTV and LifeNews TV channels have decided that in military propaganda, there can be no “taboos,” and they have shown a story about a boy, whom “the National Guard servicemen, with syringes, have turned into a target for missiles.”

The Truth: the boy, Stas, ran away from home in Krasnyi Lyman on October 12. Ever since, his parents have been looking for him. The search for him is [in the area of] the Krasnoarmiisk Municipal Department of the Main Directorate of the MIA of Ukraine, in the Donetsk region.

“The boy left his house and still has not returned. Features: 12-13 years, height 140 cm, thin, has oval face, blue eyes, light hair of average length. The child was wearing a dark red sweater, sports trousers, sneakers. Stanislav has “mild mental retardation. Inclined to vagrancy,” stated the Krasnoarmiisk Municipal Department of the Main Directorate of the MIA.

By the way, in the report of one Russian channel, the boy shows puncture marks on one arm, but in the report of another channel — the puncture marks are on the other arm. What National Guard missiles have got to do with it is not clear – not to mention that the National Guard has no missile weapons.

Land and slaves for National Guard soldiers

For their participation in a war against Russia in Donbas, every Ukrainian soldier of the National Guard will get a parcel of land and two slaves. A story about it without any proof was shown by Russian Channel One.

The Truth: The man who tells the story about slaves is a certain Viktor Bykodorov, who is titled to be the head of the village community of Stepanivka. But the fact is that the real head of the village community is Volodymyr Konovalov. It may be concluded that Viktor Bykodorov is a self-proclaimed head of the village council. That explains a lot. The Russian channel does not put the story, which obviously raises many questions, under any doubt, but rather, continues to build a story on this fiction, presenting “slaves and land” as a fait accompli.

In social media, the story about slaves and the drugged-up boy has caused a storm of emotions and jokes. Some people started to wonder where exactly they could get and officially register themselves some slaves; others wondered why the boy could not just have been crucified the old way. You may laugh at it, but Russians can believe all this. And they do believe it.

400 missing women

This information was posted by Russian Interfax, RIA Novosti, Russia Today and other propaganda resources. They reported that in the town of Krasnoarmiisk, in the Donetsk region during the ATO, almost 400 women aged 18 to 25 years have gone missing, and recently 286 women’s bodies with gunshot wounds were supposedly found.

The Truth: All posts of this kind were posted with reference to the insurgent leader of the “DNR,” Aleksander Zakharchenko, who is wanted for numerous crimes. But that is not the issue. Zakharchenko himself later denied the disseminated information: “I didn’t say that.” The terrorist explained that he had just received about 300-400 allegations of the disappearance of young girls and women. We could have put this matter to rest if journalists hadn’t found the video in which the terrorist, nonetheless, is speaking about hundreds of dead bodies. In this case, where are these hundreds of bodies? Zakharchenko has lied twice: when he made a statement about the bodies, and later when he denied his own statement. But the truth doesn’t matter — Russian propaganda has done its job.

OSCE monitored the terrorists’ elections

One of the first who hastened to report about it were propagandists from RIA Novosti.  The information about “OSCE observers” was then reprinted by almost all Russian resources and TV channels. The key message, they say, is that the West consider the terrorists’ elections of the “DNR” and “LNR” [“Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics”] to be legitimate.

The Truth: The OSCE has officially denied this fiction of the Russian propagandists. “There is no monitoring by the OSCE of the so-called ‘elections’ in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, November 2. And there is no monitoring at the polling stations,” – said the OSCE Secretary General, Lamberto Zannier.

Volunteerism in Ukraine – is that driving force which, from the first minute, saves our country when there is a problem. Owing to your faith and inspiration we could defend our values and continue to fight the enemy.

Your mission in Ukraine is indispensable, your actions give courage and are an example to all. Everyone to whom you reach out a hand and help, remember you in their prayers, and this is the best pay for your titanic work.

You are the same soldiers as  those who stand with guns at the front and protect our homeland. Glory to the Volunteers and Glory to Ukraine!

We will win. With us are God and Ukraine!

Wings Phoenix: Year after year businessmen were stealing from soldiers on food rations

By Wings Phoenix, (Iurii Biriukov), army volunteer and Assistant Minister to the Minister of Defense
12.0.2014
Translated by Wings Phoenix Eng and edited by Voices of Ukraine, used with permission

At this moment, there will follow an extremely angry, biased post, full of bad language. Therefore, as one should, please keep your children away from our glowing monitors.

Once, ten days ago, I told you about a mystical number – 17.62 UAH. This is exactly the amount that our state allows [us] to spend on the food of our armed forces. Using the “flight” norm this amount was increased to 23.22 UAH and at this point for now (I hope) it stops. I am not counting the cost of delivering the “service” – this is separate money and a separate story.

And now – the field ration, “Daily norm of dry products (individual).” The state gives us 52.05 UAH for its financing and production. 52 UAH for food per day is both little… and fine. It all depends on how you do it. Although, really, it is not enough – after all the real cost of all the components inside is not 52 UAH, but 70! So, as with products used for feeding soldiers in the camps, the state from the very beginning forces the producers to save, to under-fill, to under-give. Oh, the poor suppliers! They were forced to steal from the stock, from the ration. Do you know how they do it? Would you like to know? Only please don’t eat now and don’t plan to eat for the next few hours!

The volunteer crew in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine took upon themselves a hellish task – studying the activity of the apparel and food provisioning services. They are heroes, fearless and goal-oriented. Their visit caused hysterics in the management of one of the enterprises, panic, threats, attempts at bribery – aaah, just the usual stuff.

What follows are some of the dry excerpts from the protocol of the inspection:

“…on the territory, signs of the presence of domestic animals (dogs?) were discovered…”

“…horned cattle are kept in an enclosure adjacent to where pigs are located…”

“…it is dirty in the manufactory sections, there is stagnant water on the floor with additives of blood and fat…”

“…At the entrance to the slaughter section there is a large quantity of half-carcasses of horned cattle and horses which were hanging mixed together…”

“…in the de-boning section, chilled bodies of unknown animals were found; the bodies did not bear any marks or identification. The employee of the de-boning section explained that these were the carcasses of pigs. This statement raises some doubts due to the fact that there was no fat at all found on the meat. Judging from a visual inspection, they were not similar to pig carcasses…”

“…Briquettes of meat of unknown origin were found on the floor. There were no markings on them which made it impossible to identify the type of meat as well as its origin…”

“…Wheat flour with an expired shelf life was found in the storage area for ready-to-use products…”

Our volunteers arrived to the tasting part in a half-bent over stage. And the saddest thing was still to come:

“…in the presence of a responsible representative and the head of the canned food section, two cans of meat food labelled “stewed beef, top grade” were opened. The contents completely do NOT correspond to the state approved norm DSTU 4450-2005

– meat pieces extracted from the can contained cartilage, with firm conjunctive tissue; the fluid was muddy, the smell and taste were those typical for stewed meat but without any sign of spices. After tasting, an unpleasant after-taste appeared in the mouth…”

Three pages of conclusions follow, with lots of terminology and DSTU [State Standards for Ukraine] norms. My eyes catch the sentence: “As of today it is impossible to stop the production of over 300,000 rations which have already been paid for… we consider it inappropriate to organize control of production on the premises of the enterprise since bribery attempts started immediately, followed later by direct threats…”

The inspection was carried out on November 26, in the morning, and on November 26 in the evening we got a paper in our hands that arrived to the MoD [Ministry of Defense] from the management of the enterprise:

“…I would like to inform you that the group of volunteers performed an unplanned inspection. There were no serious violations found… insignificant violations of sanitary norms were eliminated; the people responsible were punished following administrative procedures…”

Year after year these “businessmen” were pretending that they were feeding our soldiers. Year after year technical specifications and the wordings of tendering procedures were written for one producer. Year after year they were stealing from the army, from our boys. And now they even threaten us.

What can I say…À la guerre comme à la guerre

Volodymyr Parasyuk: Dear Deputies, I came here to break the system and I will do so

By Volodymyr Parasyuk, Euromaidan protestor, Commander–Dnipro Battalion, People’s Deputy of Ukraine Parliament (Non-affiliated)
12.04.2014
Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

I will never, and I’ll never allow anyone else, to insult the enlightened ideas of Maidan. For this is the foundation for our struggle, and only that strength purchased at the cost of each life our heroes gave for us enables our nation to move forward.

Volodymyr Hroisman will either be a competent Chairman of the VR [Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s Parliament], or he won’t last long. Because the demand of every Ukrainian – is transparency and fairness in the process of accepting any decision. If you want to lead the government, then lead the government; if you want to take responsibility on yourself, then take it, but you will do so properly, and not just as you wish.

For all of these days, I have sat very quietly and calmly in the chamber of Parliament, and observed everything that was transpiring there. I have tried to attribute it all to the Speaker’s lack of experience, to the enormous ambitions of the fractions, or to the fact that such a system cannot be destroyed in two days, but today was the last straw. I will no longer sit quietly by while all possible protocols are manipulated and broken as decisions are being made.

Moreover, I will not tolerate having the phrases, “Sit down in your place. This is not Maidan for you” thrown at me. Dear deputies from the BPP [Bloc Petro Poroshenko], or any other faction, if it weren’t for Maidan, you would not be sitting in this chamber now, and you would never has as much power as you currently hold.

I came here to break the [pre-existing] system and I will do so with all the ways and means afforded to me as a deputy.

Despite some “agreements” [that had allegedly been reached], Russian-terrorist troops engaged in active hostilities in the area of Donetsk during the past 24 hours. In addition to shelling, they simultaneously attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops near Opytne, in order to encircle our units stationed in the area of the Donetsk Airport. The enemy also delivered concentrated fire strikes along the entire line of contact in the vicinity of Donetsk. Multiple clashes between units of Russian-terrorist and Ukrainian troops were reported in the zone between Staromykhailivka and the Petrovsky district of Donetsk.

As a result of the counter-battery firefights and strikes of Ukrainian artillery on the positions of Russian-terrorist troops in the area of Volnovakha–Novotroitske– Dokuchajevsk, enemy frontline units that advanced towards Volnovakha have suffered significant losses. Several checkpoints and entrenched positions of the terrorists were destroyed; the dead and wounded are being transported to the area of Olenivka. At some of the destroyed positions, the enemy is not evacuating the bodies of the killed insurgents.

Meanwhile, a large enemy formation, equipped with artillery and armored vehicles, is concentrated behind Dokuchajevsk and Olenivka. [Our sources] were able to identify at least 3 reinforced company tactical groups of the Russian army, and several “composite” groups of local insurgents used as “lead teams” (the latter experience the majority of casualties). A single command center reportedly coordinates the Russian-terrorist troops in this district. The enemy continues to engage in counter-battery fights with Ukrainian artillery in the area, mainly firing from positions near Dokuchajevsk. We are receiving reports of enemy artillery striking residential areas as well.

The insurgents continue to set up new artillery firing positions near Makiivka (in the northern and northwestern outskirts of the town). During the last 24 hours, the enemy has delivered massive fire strikes onto the positions of Ukrainian troops in the area of Debaltseve; there are casualties among the local civilians.

The positions of Ukrainian troops to the north and northwest of Luhansk have experienced an increase in heavy shellings (the IR group earlier noted the arrival of a large insurgent artillery group in this area – at least two divisions of cannon and rocket artillery). During yesterday’s battle near Stanytsia Luhanska, the enemy used tanks en masse (8 units). The offensive was disrupted by the return fire of Ukrainian troops. As a result, the enemy lost at least 1 tank.

A “wandering” enemy artillery group was noticed in the area of the Bakhmut highway. We were able to identify 6 units of 2S1 Gvozdika 122-mm self-propelled artillery systems, which changed their firing positions.

A convoy of insurgents wounded in fights near Schastya (up to 80 persons) arrived in Luhansk. Most of the wounded will be evacuated to Rostov-on-Don (Russia). A convoy of 3 URAL trucks traveled from Horlivka towards Yenakijeve, carrying dead bodies of insurgents and Russian servicemen. Another convoy with dead bodies arrived from Donetsk to Makiivka (at least 2 covered URAL trucks escorted by Russian military dressed as local insurgents with DNR [Donetsk People’s Republic] insignia).
