STATEMENT of Vadim Rabinovich
President of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress
Co-Chair of the European Jewish Parliament
During the entire period of current events in Ukraine I was in Kiev and observed the situation with my own eyes, and not on TV or in other media. The United Jewish Community of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Jewish Congress has been in constant contact with Jewish communities throughout Ukraine and with law enforcement authorities to monitor and study the situation.
The overall situation in relation to the Jewish community in Ukraine is tolerant and peaceful. There have been no mass outbursts or exacerbation of anti-Semitism in Ukraine.
Several weeks ago, there were cases of attacks on members of the community at the synagogue in Kiev in the Podol district. The situation is being investigated, police officers have opened a criminal case, and the investigation has video documentation. There is every belief that the investigation will be carried out to completion.
On the night of February 24, a burning Molotov cocktail was thrown into the wall of the synagogue in Zaporozhye by an unidentified person. I spoke directly with the Rabbi of Zaporozhye and the head of the local community. Fortunately there were no serious consequences or damage as a result, and everything will be restored. Law enforcement agencies are seriously engaged in the situation, a criminal case has been opened, and there are video surveillance materials.
I personally talked with a whole array of leaders of groups who consider themselves radical, who assured me that there was not, and will not be, any expression of anti-Semitism planned. Furthermore, they emphasized that they will fight mercilessly with any such manifestations in their surroundings.
I want to reiterate that even in this difficult period of civil strife there is no reason to claim that there are any serious cases of anti-Semitism in Ukraine!
Thus I categorically repudiate as untrue the allegations of mass anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Ukraine that some foreign media have made!
Attempting to fan the flames around this issue is a provocation and is not conducive to a peaceful life of the Jewish community in Ukraine.
Together with all the people of Ukraine, the Jewish community will actively participate in building a democratic state and promoting the revival and prosperity of the country.
