CLASHES BECAME WARFARE AGAINST PEOPLE’S SELF-DEFENSE IN DOWNTOWN KYIV – ongoing updates.

Feb. 20: last night’s truce was broken on Maidan in the center of Kyiv. It is still unclear who fired the first live shots which came from the direction of the Conservatory building behind police lines. Molotov cocktails and grenades were also being thrown by police at the Conservatory. The directions of the shots point to a provocation by government forces as it would be extremely difficult for protesters to take firing positions from that direction. Since then Berkut snipers have been firing at protesters. Reports of deaths vary between 50 and 100 people.

Reports of the Kyiv Public Prosecutor’s Office being secretly evacuated. One by one, people with bags and packages are running out of the building.

14:30 – Schools in Dangers

It seems that danger is knocking on the doors of schools even far from the city center. Facebook subscribers status updates:
Tatiana Pavliuk: Information hasn’t been confirmed yet. Teachers from the Troeshchyna gymnasium at Marina Tsvetayeva Street called the children’s parents. They informed that “titushkas” burst into the school. Teachers ask to take the children home, urgently.

Masha Zemlyanska: A girl from 11th grade (age 17) of the lyceum at Hryhorenko Street calls their parents and asks them to take her home. There are buses with strangers around the school. Children are let out of the school only after parents sign for them. The same situation is in other schools and kindergartens. Better come by car!

Maksym Opanasenko: Schoolchildren and school staff from gymnasium N 178 at Povitroflotskyy Ave., 22 are being evacuated. Eyewitnesses have informed about that. Armed strangers allegedly enter the building.

15:53 – Yanukovych Interrupts Meeting with European Ministers to Call Putin

Ukrayinska Pravda:
Yanukovych interrupted his meeting with the ministers to make a phone call to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin – reports Gazeta Wyborcza, with reference to agency РАР.

The meeting of Victor Yanukovych with ministers of foreign affairs of France, Germany and Poland has been going on for over four hours.

“Yanukovych is now calling Putin. Ministers are persuading him to shorten his tenure until the end of this year,” said representative of РАР, quoted by Wyborcza.

16:00 – Train with Military and Titushkas Successfully Stopped in Dniptropetrivsk

Train with soldiers and titushkas was stopped in Dniptropetrivsk. Train cars disconnected from the locomotive.
Larysa Lavrenchuk confirms:
The train transporting Dnipropetrivsk paratrooper brigade N25 [about which we reported before], is now being held in place by 500 to 700 protesters. Pressure has been put on the head of the station’s train yard Serhiy Vorobyov, who then gave the order to disconnect the locomotive from the train cars. The protesters dismantled the barricade in front of the locomotive, let it pass, and put it back together. Now the train cars with the military is still being picketed from both sides.

Meanwhile, in the Parliament…

Some 130 deputies of various factions have gathered in the Parliament. Quorum will be reached soon, says Arsen Avakov. According to him, a joint decision has been made not to leave the Parliament building until the crisis is resolved and bloodshed stopped.
