KIEV HELP to the wounded: For SUCH A PEOPLE, it’s a sin NOT to stand up on Maidan. I will get better, and then it’s back to Maidan!

We visited Kyiv hospital #17 today. They had a new patient there, and we brought him the “starter pack:” all the basic necessities – personal hygiene items, a cup, slippers, pants, a t-shirt, a towel, etc. For every patient, all of them we hand out by name personally – cutlets, water, sour milk products [kefir and yogurt] , pyrizhky [stuffed buns], lemons, bananas, and sauerkraut, – since the patients take antibiotics and need to support their digestive tract, the sour milk products and sauerkraut are excellent natural sources of bifidobacteria, microelements, vitamins and digestive acid. Someone already brought them oladky [thick pancakes], we saw them on the table.

Everyone is fully stocked up on medications – our volunteer Natalya visits them daily.

Danylo P., a patient at the pulmonology department, draws various abstract sketches; he has already used up two notepads and asked for more. He is the person we bought inflatable sleeves for; Danylo says that he inflates them and is already tired.

We left water bottles and food for Afghan vets who guard the patients at the hospital around the clock.

A patient (not from Maidan) in a room at a multi-trauma unit robbed the patients he shared the room with and ran off. He took documents from one man, and sneakers from the other. We promised to buy even better shoes for the patient. And we will. It is not a pleasant situation, but there are people of different morals. We fed all the patients in this room, talked with them, they were very happy to have visitors and praised our Natasha for her attentiveness and speed.

At the exit, we met a strong older man in the room the Afghan vets occupy. Medics brought him from Maidan, and doctors officially discharged him and sent him home to recuperate. Petro Dmytrovych Yasny lives in the Darnytsya district of Kyiv.

We called him a cab, looked at his discharge papers and saw a number of medications on the list, including Augmentin [penicillin antibiotic]. The cost of medications was quite expensive, almost half of his pension. We gave him 500 Hryvnias. Petro Dmytrovych got confused and refused to take the money: “You do not know me, and yet you give me so much money!” – We do know you, we say. “Who are you girls, anyway?” he asks.

We gave him our standard answer: we are Ukrainian helpers; people send us money to thank you for your courage and for serving the interests of other Ukrainians. Petro Dmytrovych straightened himself up: “I stood at the 2004 Maidan to the end! For all of us, for the people!” Then he continued, ill at ease: “ And you girls, you are giving me such a big sum of money, just like that…?”

Ira solemnly tells him: “Not just like that for nothing, Petro Dmytrovych, but for your heroism! People of Ukraine can afford to thank you.” Petro Dmytrovych glanced at us, his eyes watered, a hint of smile appeared on his face,  people know about him, they have not forgotten him.

He says: “For SUCH A PEOPLE, it’s a sin to NOT to stand up, girls. I will get better, and then it’s back, to Maidan!”

EDITOR’S NOTE:
The Kyiv Help to the Wounded group left a message saying that:
“Without the help of the people, we wouldn’t be able to do much.”
Therefore, here is a real way those not in Kiev can help and we list the information from their FB page in English here for how to get money to them. Below that is a link to another site set up to help with medical aid. Please help if you are able:

Bank cards for money transfers in Hryvnias:

  1. PrivatBank: 5168 7423 1447 4606 – card under Panchenko Iryna Volodymirivna

Word of advice:

Please check if the currency corresponds to the appropriate card. If you transferred Euros to the card that accepts only US Dollars, do not worry, the money will be transferred to the Beneficiary’s technical account and then rerouted to the correct card.

If you are making an online money transfer outside Ukraine, there might not be enough space for all the information – please contact your bank manager and give them the full account details we provided, which will then be entered manually.

Please write a note during money transfer or send us a private Facebook message regarding the amount and time of the transfer (also, please mention the card you sent the money to – this will simplify our money transfer tracking and accounting).

Unfortunately, Paypal transfers are complicated in Ukraine, therefore we ask you to use the above-mentioned bank details. Western Union or Money Gram demand time (standing in line) and being there in person to receive the money, thus unfortunately we cannot use them.

All your money will be put to good use and we will report on spending. If all the needs are met and there is some money left, it will be transferred to active volunteer and charitable organizations.
THANK YOU!
