Missing photographer from Lviv, who was captured by “Berkut,” found in critical condition: “Driven out of city limits, undressed, kicked.”
On Wednesday, security forces detained Maryan Havriliv, a freelance photographer, in Kiev. In the evening, he was found in very critical condition – he was savagely beaten.
He was filming the clashes on Hrushevskoho St. when “Berkut” went on the offensive. With many other protestors, Havriliv was force dragged into operation security forces.
The photographer, as well as other detainees, was thrown into a paddywagon and had his mobile phone taken away. Fortunately, he had another phone hidden, that security forces did not find in their direct search. With this phone, he was able to call his brother.
“He says that there are a lot of detainees; just in the paddywagon where Maryan was detained, there were at least 20 people and he saw at least six paddywagons,” said Mikhail Havriliv, “Maryan says that all the detained were stripped to the waist and driven to some sort of field.”
“He was talking very quietly because people around were keeping watch. They took them somewhere where one could not hear cars or street noise or people. Says that it’s very cold, that so many people in the paddywagon lost consciousness. He doesn’t know where they are, and can not say anything,” he reported.
Later, on the Facebook page of EuroMaidan, the Lviv photographer was found.
“Missing Lviv photographer Maryan Havriliv was found. Maryan was in the line of fire, after which he and many other nearby men were snatched and thrown into paddies. 21 people were shoved into one paddy. The citizens were driven out of the city in an unknown direction; there they were stripped to the waist, kicked and thrown into the snow. Havriliv is in very serious condition due to beatings by Berkuts,” reported activists.
