The Music of Warriors: a checkpoint on the Ukrainian cultural front

Wearing a balaclava and playing the Anthem of Ukraine on a cello in the snow in Kyiv, a Ukraine musician with the call sign “Martin” in a soldier’s uniform participates in a project entitled the Music of Warriors. The project is simply about the fact that there is heart and soul in the Ukrainian army. Military and musicians perform various classical and well-known Ukrainian songs on classical and Ukrainian musical instruments. The first work is the video posted on February 8th of “Martin’s” Anthem of Ukraine.

Oleksander Tkachuk

The Music of Warriors patriotic art project is “one of the checkpoints on the Ukrainian cultural front” according to its founder Oleksander Tkachuk, written on the project’s Facebook page. The music is recorded in the “Spravzhniy [Real] Sound” studio in Kyiv. Tkachuk also says that he “aims to prove that music is also a weapon.”

“A musician is a warrior – the musical instrument is a weapon in his/her hands. They do not kill with music – but rather, give a chance for life and hope, for the better.”

“The Ukrainian army, Ukrainian soldiers, these are not the ‘punishers’ Russian media likes to talk about. These are educated, cultured, intelligent citizens protecting their own country,” Tkachuk stated to Ukrainian media.

Watch and listen:

In the second piece, posted on February 13th, the popular song “Lenta Za Lentoyu” [Ribbon by Ribbon], an old Ukrainian Insurgent Army tune that inspired rebels to defend an independent Ukraine and was played often during Euromaidan, is played here on bagpipes by a soldier with the call sign “Dudar.” “It uplifts the soldier’s spirit,” Tkachuk explains. “The bagpipe is an instrument by whose sounds the Scots gained their independence.” Yevhen “Dudar” himself was often heard on playing the anthem and other melodies on Kyiv’s Independence Square during some of the worst storming of Maidan last year – it had a huge affect calming people’s nerves. Espreso.TV did an interview with him in Ukrainian and Russian in relation to the Music of Warriors project. In the video, he is seen playing his bagpipes at the historical site of the temple of the ancient Slavic pagan god Perun, on Kyiv’s Lysa Hora [Bald Mountain] and in front of Fort Lysohirskyy’s postern No.4 in the same locale.  Have a listen:

Participating in the project are musicians who are both not currently active in the war, but who are warriors on the cultural front, and soldiers who are musicians who are currently active in the “ATO” zone operations.

Tkachuk explained on his Facebook page: “I want to make it clear in advance – I am not a fighter, not a soldier. At least not for now. The name of this cultural project should not be taken literally. This is the creative idea of the author of the project. The aim of the project – is to, in this way, attract the attention of the public to the Ukrainian military, their needs and requirements. That is why according to the rules and conditions of the project musicians wear camouflage.”

“Sooner or later, the war will end. But the art that was created during the war and by soldiers, it will last for the ages,” Tkachuk stated during an Espreso.TV interview.

Future videos include bandurist Jaroslav Dzhus, “a musician who has perfect pitch,” whose call sign is “Burshtyn” [Amber]. His video will launch by the end of this week and will be devoted to the anniversary of the shootings on Maidan. The music is being kept secret at the moment but Tkachuk promises “it is powerful.” He is also interested in launching a second project involving all the ‘songs from the heart’ composed by Ukrainian soldiers at the front to record them for posterity.

“We are doing this not only for the soldiers, but for people who are in the occupied territories who for some reason consider us to be their enemies. We aren’t their enemies. We want to coexist in peace,” Tkachuk stated.

Dmitry Tymchuk: Military update 2.16 #FreeSavchenko

According to operational data from Information Resistance:

Between the beginning of the ‘ceasefire’ (00:00 on 02.15.2015) and yesterday mid-afternoon, Russian-terrorist forces have been grossly violating the [latest Minsk] agreement, by repeatedly shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian targets. After the beginning of the truce, the first strike was carried out by terrorists on the night of 02.15, from positions in the area of Stakhanov (where a battery of howitzers opened fire).

Since mid-afternoon yesterday, the enemy, in addition to attacks from almost all types of weapons, has also made repeated attempts to resume the offensive. Ukrainian troops are only opening fire in retaliation. The most difficult situation is in the Debaltseve springboard.

In particular, several attacks on Ukrainian troops were reported near the village of Chornukhyne. In Novohryhorivka, enemy formations tried to surround two Ukrainian checkpoints. In the course of that attack, a terrorist tank detonated a mine (and was finished off by grenade launcher strike). While Ukrainian troops were repelling the attack, one enemy IFV was struck with an ATGM [anti-tank guided missile] (the crew was destroyed).

At the same time, both the militants and Russian armed forces units were actively attacking Ukrainian troops in the area of Debaltseve, using cannon artillery and MLRS. Most of the MLRS strikes were made from firing positions in the vicinity of Lomovatka. In some instances, the fire was more intense than before the ‘ceasefire.’

Also, artillery positions in the vicinity of Shakhtarsk (12 units of cannon artillery and 6 MLRS units) delivered fire on the positions of Ukrainian troops in Debaltseve. Temporary insurgent checkpoints were set up along the Snizhne – Donetsk motorway, blocking civilian vehicle traffic in the area of Russian-terrorist troop artillery positions (in order to prevent any photo or video coverage of the attacks).

Meanwhile, the enemy has been regrouping their forces. Two battalion tactical teams of Russian-terrorist troops were deployed to the area of Horlivka, reinforced by a separate armored group (a total of about 900 people, 25 tanks, 32 armored combat vehicles, up to 20 motor vehicles, two mortar batteries, 2 batteries of cannon artillery – 6 D-30 howitzers and 6 MT-12 anti-tank guns).

Multiple instances of firing on the positions of Ukrainian troops were also recorded in the Donetsk and Luhansk areas over the last few days. The enemy was using small arms, mortars, tanks, cannon artillery, and MLRS.

Over the past weekend, the enemy attempted attacks in the area of Mariinka. An attacking enemy group was stopped by the flanking fire of Ukrainian troops, and forced to pull back to its original lines.

In the Mariupol direction, the previous day (until 00:00 on 02.15), a Ukrainian artillery group repeatedly struck at the Russian-terrorist troop units that tried to counterattack near the settlement of Shirokyne from the side of Bezimenne. As the ‘ceasefire’ came into effect, Ukrainian artillery strikes stopped, which the enemy took advantage of, trying to bomb the identified positions [of the Ukrainian artillery]. At the same time, the enemy began moving armored vehicles towards the ‘front line.’

An explosion took place at the local police department in Horlivka. Several insurgents were injured. According to preliminary data, the explosion was caused by careless handling of an RGD-5 type grenade.

An unusual convoy was spotted moving from Donetsk through Snizhne, towards the Russian border. It consisted of seven jeeps, one BTR-80, 12 armored buses with tinted windows, 6 covered ‘Ural’ trucks, and an open pickup truck with a heavy machine gun in the back. The convoy moved at a high speed without stopping at checkpoints.

Marauding has become more commonplace at ‘DNR’ [Donetsk People’s Republic] roadblocks, where civilians are being openly robbed now. According to the terrorists themselves, they are no longer being paid a salary, and have to “live off the land.”

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense shared this photo yesterday (February 15, 2015) of the last checkpoint before Russian-held territory.

The National Bank of Ukraine announced the launch of commemorative coins, the Heroes of Maidan series, 2015, dedicated to last year’s protests on Maidan [Independence Square] that led to the change of power in Kyiv. This was reported on the Bank’s website.

The series is dedicated to the protests that took place in Ukraine from November 2013 – February 2014, which were filled with the desire to change to a European direction for the country.

According to the website of the National Bank, from February 18th, all 3 coins will be launched dedicated to the events on Maidan. They will be called The Revolution of Dignity, Euromaidan and Heaven’s Hundred. All are with a nominal value of 5 hryvnia and will be released in an edition of 50 thousand copies each.

The artists who composed the coins are Vladimir Taran, Alexander Kharuk, and Sergei Kharuk. The sculptors are Svyatoslav Ivanenko and Roman Tchaikovsky.

The Revolution of Dignity:

Dedicated to civic courage and patriotism, which were exhibited by the citizens of Ukraine of all nationalities, in seeking to develop and strengthen the democratic state constitutional principles of democracy, human rights and freedoms.

On the obverse side of the coin, against the background relief pattern of a flame, a dark black shape of a large bell looms with the inscription UKRAINE inside it at the top, under which is the figure of a participant in the events, a member of the self-defense units or sotnia.

On the reverse side of the composition, inside the contours of the cross, one of the fragments of the event – the confrontation on Maidan during which people burned tires – is depicted in full color. (The flags are depicted using tampography or tampoprint pad printing to get the color).

 Euromaidan:

On the obverse side of the coin against a background in relief of a stylized flag is depicted a fragment from a rally (“viche”): a central square formed by a crowd of people framed by the inscription, which is a quote from Article 5 of the Constitution of Ukraine: “the bearer of sovereignty / the only source / of POWER IN UKRAINE / are the people.

On the reverse side: against the background of the flag of the European Union (in color) is a hand clenched into a fist, holding the State Flag of Ukraine (in color, using tampoprint). Along the left is the inscription Euromaidan.

Heaven’s Hundred (or Heavenly Hundred):

Dedicated to the memory of the heroes who became a symbol of dignity, each of whom made a personal act of courage, and took a stand against violence and injustice, giving back the most precious of all – their lives, for a new, revived Ukraine.

On the obverse side: against a background of paving stones in relief, “UKRAINE” is inscribed above under which is a small State Emblem of Ukraine (the tryzub). Laid out on the pavement are carnations, symbolizing the shed blood of the heroes with the inscription: “HEROES / never die!”

The composition on the reverse of the coin: on the bottom are candles with flames that rise up into the sky symbolizing the souls of the heroes against the blue-yellow (tampoprint used) of the National Flag of Ukraine. At the top, against a black background, is a stylized inscription: “Heavenly / Hundred” with the “t” of the Ukrainian “sotnia” (for hundred) stylized into an orthodox cross.

Justice is wanted.

Justice is wanted.

At least a little. Here is this – the enemy’s T-64. All the evidence – is in the photo. The serial number on the tank: 09ET18058. Shot down during the battle in the village of Troitske. The ‘author’ of the successful strike – gunner Anton Prokoshin. 1st Battalion, 17th Separate Tank Brigade. Anton is now in hospital in Dnipropetrovsk. Commander Alexey Chaban can round out the details of the battle. Here is what I want from the government – to pay the bonus you promised. You can look at a trophy and touch it with your [own] hands, it is on the move. Petro Poroshenko, Arsenіy Yatsenyuk – fulfill your promise. Although, of course, one needs to award [the soldiers]. Value the living heroes, do not forget about the fallen and their families. Justice is very much wanted. At least a little.
