Photographs that show how Ukrainian servicemen dig trenches on the shore of the Azov Sea in Mariupol have surfaced on the web.

As previously reported by UNIAN, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced on March 14 that every region should contribute to the construction of fortifications.

Poroshenko stressed the importance of building an effective line of defense. “Based on our experience, as well as the best examples of fortification projects, dugouts, and location reference points, we need to build a highly efficient, deep echelon defense in record time,” said Poroshenko.

On March 19, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – the Minister of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities of Ukraine Gennadiy Zubko emphasized that the construction of fortifications in eastern Ukraine is to be completed by mid-May.

“We have very limited time for this work – we must build all fortifications until mid-May. The situation is tense, and we must combine not just the efforts of the military and regional administrations, but the efforts of all Ukrainian citizens to address the problem,” Zubko stated.

Nadiya Savchenko’s lawyer Mark Feygin tweeted earlier today: “I just came from Nadiya in prison. She sends everyone a hello and this appeal.” And Nadiya writes:

Nadiya Savchenko in early March

“Good day to you, good people!

Thank you to everyone who came to my trial yesterday (03.26.2015).

When they were transferring me back to SIZO-1, in the paddy wagon, I heard you shouting “Nadya! Nadya!” 🙂

Then the paddy wagon driver turned the siren on to drown out your voices and to disperse you. And I burst out laughing! :)))

I heard you nonetheless! 🙂 I would hear your voice through any walls! Only please, be careful… I really don’t want to hear your voices from the neighboring cell! 😉

Meeting with you gave me a whole new sea of strength! And, it gave me enough strength for the next court date!

Until the next meeting!
And, I wish [for it to be], finally in FREEDOM!

PS: Nonetheless, the fourth charge they were trying to pin on me did not stick! That’s at least some victory.

Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to the Heroes!”

Operational data from Information Resistance:

During the past 24 hours, Russian-terrorist forces in Donbas have fired on the positions of Ukrainian troops over 20 times – in violation of the Minsk agreements; an attempted assault on the positions of Ukrainian troops was recorded as well.

The most intense enemy firestrikes were reported in the Seaside [Mariupol] sector. Insurgents and Russian mercenaries fired on the positions of Ukrainian troops near the settlements of Shyrokyne, Staromarivka, Novoselivka, and Mykolaivka, using 120-mm mortars and heavy grenade launchers. The positions of Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk sector, near the settlements of Pisky, Hranitne and Avdiivka, were also shelled (mainly with 120-mm and 82-mm mortars; the enemy used armored vehicles against Avdiivka – 2 tanks fired from pre-equipped positions, and SPG-9 mounted grenade launchers were used in the area).

In the vicinity of Mayorskiy (Artemivsk sector), an enemy group of up to 2 platoons in strength, supported by 3 armored vehicles, launched an offensive on the advanced positions of Ukrainian troops. Initially, the Ukrainian units stopped the enemy units’ advance by precision fire from their pre-equipped positions and a tactical maneuver; subsequently, the enemy was forced to retreat to their starting lines.

In the vicinity of Sokilnyky (Luhansk sector), an insurgent force (up to 2 platoons)  made two attempts to come into close proximity with the positions of Ukrainian troops, using a cover of heavy small arms fire. Both attempts were unsuccessful, and the enemy was forced to pull back to the starting line.

The “DNR” [Donetsk People’s Republic] and “LNR” [Luhansk People’s Republic] continue increasing the combat ability of their forces, working to organize the remaining extrasystemic and irregular formations into solid and structured “armed forces.” The insurgent command focus their efforts in several directions – improving the organizational structure (bringing the different-sized and variously structured formations of the “Army of Novorossiya” to the uniform norms and standards of the Russian Armed Forces); completing the staffing of these formations with personnel and military equipment; constructing a single chain of command (both operational and administrative); improving the professional skills of the insurgents; and accumulating material and technical resources for subsequent active hostilities.

Over the past 24 hours, three targeted supply convoys were seen arriving from Russia (two along the “southern route,” one along the “northern route”). A total of 48 transport units (including 11 fuel tankers and 10 specialized vehicles) were seen on the move.

Terrorists continue to reinforce their battle formations on the Alchevsk – Stakhanov stretch. Four tanks and two AFVs (repaired and serviced at the facilities of local businesses) were seen moving in the direction of Russian-terrorist positions near the Bakhmut highway. A convoy of armored vehicles proceeded through the settlement of Metalist (near Luhansk) in the direction of Shchastya (eight AFVs, two motor cars with mounted Zu-23-2 anti-aircraft guns, and three BTR-80 APCs).

The insurgents continue reinforcing their formations in the Artemivsk sector (chiefly by transferring units from the “Horlivka garrison” here). We observed two insurgent tactical groups moving along the demarcation line, with armored vehicles (3 tanks and 6 AFVs; insurgents in this area also employ 82-mm mortars, 17 SPG-9 mounted grenade launchers, and 107-mm B-11 recoilless rifles, mainly mounted on appropriate transport platforms). In addition, 21 tanks and 18 AFVs have been transferred to the Artemivsk sector over the past 24 hours, moving through Makiivka (some of this equipment took part in the Debaltseve battles earlier and has been repaired; the rest recently arrived from Russia). The armored vehicles were transferred to the new positions in small groups.

A Russian-terrorist “training center” is operating in the vicinity of Oleksandrivsk, where a number of insurgent units are covering “training points” concerning defensive and offensive action. Armored vehicles (6 tanks, 5 ACVs) and Russian specialists are involved in the training.

South of Donetsk (Stepne – Dokuchajevsk stretch), the terrorists continue operational deception efforts for their continued reinforcements of personnel and resources. Specifically, radio communication in insurgent networks has dropped noticeably in this area, while armored vehicles are distributed across a relatively wide stretch, in small groups. The Russian-terrorist battalion tactical group that was previously concentrated in this area has deployed a portion of its personnel and forces to cover the front section between Stepne and Volnovakha, providing for the concentration of another BTG to the northwest of Dokuchajevsk. Two tactical level command and control points are present in this area.

Another Russian-terrorist tactical group is transferring to the area of Starobesheve – Telmanove. It includes 14 armored vehicles, including 4 tanks.

In the Severodonetsk – Lysychansk stretch, a number of units from the remnants of the so-called “Cossack guard” were spotted. These small units are armed with mortars, SPG-9, AGS-17, and other heavy infantry weapons.

In the Luhansk sector, the enemy is carrying out intense reconnaissance, trying to uncover the defense system of the Ukrainian troops that continue controlling the main crossings over the Seversky Donets River.

Nadiya Savchenko: I have no intention of striking bargains with the slanderous prosecution #FreeSavchenko

Being taken from Moscow’s Basmanny District Court on March 4

On March 20, 2015, the Novoye Vremya magazine published an interview with Dmitry Dinze, an attorney to Oleg Sentsov, the Ukrainian filmmaker who has been detained by Russia since May 2014 on suspicion of “plotting terrorist acts.” The attorney said that, in his opinion, the Russian prosecution is not going to drop any charges against Oleg Sentsov and Nadiya Savchenko, and “the only way out is for both to plead guilty, then there is a chance they would be turned over to Ukraine and tried in absentia.”

Nadiya Savchenko wrote a letter expressing her opinion of this suggested tactic. It was tweeted on March 25, 2015 by her lawyer Mark Feygin:

“To Ukrainians and my friends everywhere in the world.

Tomorrow, there is going to be another trial for me.

I want to make a statement before the court and, once again, declare that I am innocent of any of the crimes I am being accused of in Russia! I have committed no crimes or offences under the Articles 105, 322, 33, or 365 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

My soul ate no garlic, and will not stink! [a Ukrainian proverb] Therefore, I will not agree to plead guilty to any crime! I am not guilty, and I refuse to lie and slander myself in exchange for shorter jail time. I have no intention of bargaining with the prosecution that kidnapped me from Ukraine and is now slandering me!

I do not trade away my honor, conscience, and truth! This is why I am instructing my lawyers to conduct my case in an honest, lawful, and transparent way, and to bring it to the public attention, so that the whole world could see how dishonorable justice is in Russia! My lawyers chose a correct line of defense for me, and I am in full agreement with it.

I am also not going to bargain – with anyone! – about my beliefs and my methods of fighting back. I will continue my hunger strike until I am allowed to return to Ukraine or, as a minimum, until my detention is replaced by house arrest in the Ukrainian Consulate in the Russian Federation, which is, essentially, a part of the Ukrainian territory in Russia.

Nadiya Savchenko
25.03.2015”

Nadiya Savchenko has been on a hunger strike since December 2014. After 83 days of hunger strike, including refusing glucose injections during the last two weeks of them, Nadiya agreed to eat chicken broth. However, ten days later on March 16, Feygin posted a letter from Savchenko saying she had resumed her hunger strike to protest her continued unlawful detention by the Russian investigation authorities. She is 9 days back on hunger strike today (or on Day 92 of it as social media posters proclaim).

Her lawyer Mark Feygin also tweeted a link to the video of her capture by insurgents in June 2014. She can be seen at the 0:50 mark of the following video. (WARNING! Video may contain graphic violence.)

Dmitry Tymchuk: Military update 3.24 #FreeSavchenko

information_resistance_logo_engDmitry Tymchuk, Head of the Center for Military and Political Research, Coordinator of the Information Resistance group, Member of Parliament (People’s Front)

Operational data from Information Resistance:

Over the past 24 hours, the situation in the ATO zone was most tense in the vicinity of Avdiivka. Yesterday [March 23], terrorists executed multiple fire strikes using 120-mm mortars; tanks fired on three instances, and 122-mm artillery was used once. There was also a clash between the Ukrainian forces’  battlefield security and an insurgent group that attempted to break through the gap between two of the ATO forces’ fortified positions. After intense combat, the enemy fell back to their original lines, under cover of mortar fire.

During the day, the insurgents fired on Pisky three times, using 82-mm mortars. In this sector, the terrorists also opened fire using small arms and heavy infantry weapons (including heavy machine guns and grenade launchers), on multiple occasions.

In the vicinity of Shyrokyne, insurgents made a total of six fire strikes, using 120-mm and 82-mm mortars. In addition, the enemy’s advanced groups opened heavy fire from small arms–attempting to force back the Ukrainian troops’  advanced positions which have fortified in the western part of the village. At least two mortar units (120 mm) are active on the Pavlopil – Shyrokyne stretch. They are equipped with vehicles and employ a “hit and run” tactic, operating as single or paired details (1-2 mortars). Six armored vehicles (including 2 tanks) were also seen arriving near Shyrokyne.

Russian-terrorist formations continue increasing their combat capacity in virtually every part of the ATO zone. Supply convoys continue arriving in Donetsk, through Alchevsk, Debaltseve, and Vuhlehirsk. Over the past 24 hours, 22 vehicles and 4 pieces of specialized equipment (mobile repair shops) were reported arriving here. A terrorist company tactical group (approximately 100 personnel, 6 tanks, 8 ACVs, 5 army trucks) was transferred to the Donetsk sector, through Snizhne and Shakhtarsk.

Insurgents continue improving their “combat skills” in the “training center” in the vicinity of the Luhansk airport, undergoing tactical training with live firing, under the supervision of instructors from Russia. At this time, up to 10 pieces of combat equipment, including 4 tanks, are involved in these efforts.

The insurgent company tactical group that had arrived on the Sokolnyky – Krymske stretch yesterday (as previously reported by the IR group) took positions deep behind the Russian-terrorist lines, to act as a reserve.

In an area east of Luhansk, Russian-terrorist artillery forces continue concentrating. An additional artillery unit (three D-30 howitzers) arrived to join the artillery battery already deployed here (four 2S1 “Gvozdika” self-propelled guns).

A new Russian-terrorist formation was spotted in the Petrovskyi district of Donetsk (a resupplied unit that is part of the “Oplot” gang, arriving from the southern sector). The formation includes approximately 110-120 insurgents, two ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft systems on transport platforms, five anti-tank missile systems, and up to ten heavy machine guns of different types and modifications. The formation also includes 2 off-road vehicles, 9 army trucks, one BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle, and two APCS: BTR-80 and BTR-70.
