Operational data from Information Resistance:

Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas continue firing at Ukrainian troop positions in the ATO zone and at a number of settlements adjacent to the front. The nature of the shellings has changed dramatically – most of them are now carefully aimed so as to damage specific targets and the advanced units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Unsighted fire is now rare. Except for the “traditional” weaponry (small arms, stand-mounted antitank and antipersonnel grenade launchers (SPG-9M, AGS-17, AGS-21, and 82/120 mm mortars), militants make active use of the on-board weaponry of armored vehicles (mainly BMP’s and BTR’s), heavy machine guns, and specialized sniper weapons (including large-caliber sniper rifles).

An upsurge is apparent in the activity of terrorists’ “small troop groups” – various types of DRG’s and small infantry units (up to one platoon in strength). Making use of the recently bloomed “foliage,” these groups operate in the neutral zone, attempting to penetrate the ATO forces’ tactical rear. Their tasks include laying mines to disrupt nearby communication lines in the tactical rear of the Ukrainian troops; carrying out sudden fire strikes with infantry weapons; staging ambushes; and actively reconnoitering the ATO forces’ combat formations.

For example, near Stanytsia Luhanska, the enemy actively makes use of the “greenery” along the Severskyi Donets river to approach the ATO forces’ positions and fire heavily on the advanced Ukrainian troop units. These fire raids are carried out at night by small infantry groups using small arms, under-barrel and stand-mounted grenade launchers, and heavy machine guns.

In the vicinity of Avdiivka, the Donetsk International Airport (DAP) and Pisky, militants use similar tactics, operating from positions near Yasynuvata Junction (and south of it), west of Spartak, and Vesele under heavy covering fire from mortars and grenade launchers. They are constantly trying to approach the ATO forces’ strongholds and observation posts to within an effective range for small arms, and open heavy fire.

During the past few days, terrorists stepped up their activity in the Mariupol (coastal) and western Donetsk directions of operations (Mar’inka – Krasnohorivka), with mass shellings and a high level of sniper group activity. In addition, in these areas militants frequently used BMP’s and BTR’s. A similar situation can be seen on stretches along the front to the north and west of Horlivka (Zaitseve, Mayorsk, Leninske, Novhorodske), where the enemy is also actively using mortars.

“Information” about preparations for a “Ukrainian troop offensive” keeps circulating among the operational command staff of the so-called “1st Army Corps” [AC]. Allegedly, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have already prepared two attack groups, which are currently concentrated in the operational and tactical rear of their battle formations in the ATO zone. According to militant “intelligence,” these groups will start advancing and deploying to the front line “only right before the start of the offensive.” According to the “1st AC’s” latest “intelligence,” there has been a massive redeployment of the Ukrainian troops’ military command, logistics supply, and combat support towards the demarcation line. Terrorists view the movement of the ATO forces’ headquarters closer to the front as a clear sign of an offensive in preparation. Under this pretext, militants are trying to accumulate more forces and resources at the front line, including weapons and heavy armor which are supposed to be withdrawn under the Minsk agreements.

On several “threatened” stretches, terrorists have concentrated fairly large amounts of forces and resources, including tanks and artillery. For example, two reinforced battalions, stationed in two echelons, have been concentrated north of Donetsk in the Yasynuvata – Spartak – Yakovlivka area, with another battalion-size reserve unit on its way to reinforce this section of the front between Makiivka and Donetsk. According to the “narrative,” militant command is examining the possibility of a “Ukrainian breakthrough” either at Yasynuvata, or further north, towards Yenakijeve. Militants have deployed a tactical group (of up to one reinforced battalion in strength) in the southwestern part of Horlivka, with similar troop groups noted in the vicinity of Dokuchajevsk and Telmanove (we received confirmation that militant heavy armor was being transferred near Kuznetsi, Novoazovskyi district, with some of it deployed further north towards Telmanove, as reinforcements or in reserve). In the lead-up to the May public holidays, it is possible that these formations may escalate the conflict to undermine the alleged expected offensive by the ATO forces.

After the scandal around the massive embezzlement of fuel among the armed gangs, an audit was carried out in a number of “1st DNR AC” units and two “2nd LNR AC” “brigades,” to assess the technical condition of the main fleet of heavy armor, which, in compliance with the Minsk agreements, was withdrawn from the demarcation line to the required distance and is currently located at several storage centers (in reality, only some of the heavy armor has been withdrawn – overall, no more than 30% of all heavy armor is assigned to militant units close to the demarcation line). The audit revealed that 45-50% of the heavy armor in the so-called “storage centers” was not combat ready – most of this equipment has been dismantled (cannibalized) after arriving at the storage center. The militant command has launched several investigations into these thefts, and has decided to replace the heavy armor in question with combat-ready heavy armor, which is currently being transferred from Russia.

Nadiya Savchenko letter April 28, 2016 – posted May 3rd #FreeSavchenko

By Nadiya Savchenko, posted by Vira Savchenko several days after visiting her sister at SIZO-3 prison in Novocherkassk
Posted on 05.03.2016, handwritten on 04.28.2016. This was written the day before she actually did fill out and sign the extradition documents with her lawyer Nikolai Polozov who came to visit her on April 29th, 2016.

“To the people:

Today I am outraged like never before!

They bring a packet of documents for me to fill out, for [my] extradition to Ukraine.

One of the questions in it makes me laugh like crazy. :))))

Question: What was your purpose in crossing the border into Russia?
(Get a load of that question!)

My answer: “I was kidnapped by the Russian Secret Services!”
They immediately write down a rather loose interpretation of my answer: ‘Crossed the border illegally.’
“Oh, no!” I tell them. “It’s not going to go down this way!”

Question: Did you ever request asylum or citizenship in Russia?
My answer: “Well, why the hell would I need that?”
And they continued in this vein, so on and so forth…

In the end, I refused to fill out those documents!

Because it’s starting to look like that one joke:

“The court is reviewing a gang rape case in which the woman became pregnant after the rape. The court’s verdict? Make the woman pay a fine for the rapists’ donor sperm! How could this happen? Simple – because the rapists themselves were the judges!”

I have found myself in a similarly surreal fable! After being kidnapped, I should also pay the kidnappers 30,000 rubles! What’s that for – gas money? Or is it my ransom, so they can finally return me to Ukraine?! Well, they can have my money!

They kidnapped me, they also robbed me (stole everything I had on me: my vest, fatigues, my boots), and now they also want my money! They can have it, and choke on it! I will give them the 30,000 rubles – they can use the money to buy some pills to fix their half-witted brains! But as for everything else – no way, no how! To that I can’t agree!

The first time they tried me, they found themselves ears-deep in shit! Now, to cover up their crimes in my abduction, they want to try me again, supposedly for extradition – but they want to do it sneakily, to make me admit to all the things I did not do! They want to return me to Ukraine not as a hero, but as some kind of criminal! Even though they’re the real criminals here!

So why should I tell lies about myself for Russia’s sake?! Just because they’re threatening to kill me? Then let them kill me! Then they will show the entire world that Russians are not only kidnappers but also murderers! Even though this is no news to anyone!

Therefore, I will not sign any documents with such wording! It’s not enough that they want to exchange two guilty [men] for one innocent [woman], but they still want to slander me as much as they can! “My soul ate no garlic, and will not stink!” [Ukrainian proverb]

I am not guilty of anything! Protecting one’s own land from the enemy is not a crime – but one’s honor and duty!!!

Does the international community, seeing all of this, not understand the full absurdity of the situation with Russian “justice”?

04.28.2016, jail, Russia.

Dmitry Tymchuk: Military update 04.21 #FreeSavchenko

Operational data from Information Resistance:

During the past 24 hours, Russian-terrorist troops slightly reduced their frequency of shelling ATO forces’ positions in Donbas with “prohibited” weapons. Terrorists were observed using mortars (120 mm included) in the areas of Avdiivka, Mar’inka and Zaitseve.

Tension remains highest in the Mar’inka, Avdiivka (as far as Opytne, Vodyane and Novhorodske), Zaitseve, Zhovanka, and Mayorsk areas. The ATO forces’ positions in Opytne were shelled by a militant group with ZU-23-2’s (2 pieces) and heavy machine guns from the western outskirts of Spartak. In addition, increased militant activity is being noted in the coastal regions and south of Donetsk – east of Talakivka, two Ukrainian troop strongholds were shelled from close range, while several observation posts again came under fire from AGS-17’s. Near Stanytsia Luhanska, militants fired small arms and under-barrel grenade launchers during the night.

It is noticeable that terrorists aim to operate actively and covertly at the front line and in the neutral zone, sending small infantry groups to open sudden close-range fire on the ATO forces’ positions. Militants are also actively scouting Ukrainian troop front line battle formations and in their tactical rear; as well as renewing minefields and attempting to neutralize the mine barriers set up by Ukrainian troops.

Under the pretext of “preparing for the parade on May 9th [Russian Victory Day],” militants are concentrating heavy weaponry in several districts of Makiivka and Donetsk – namely, tanks,  armored combat vehicles, and artillery systems. In total, as of yesterday evening (04/20/2016), this included up to 20 tanks, 25 armored combat vehicles, 8-10 MLRS, and about 20 artillery pieces of various caliber (including self-propelled guns). Notably, this weaponry and military equipment, which terrorists had previously concentrated and camouflaged in these towns, will not be used in the “parades.”

By 04.25.2016, two “motorized rifle battalions” of Russian-terrorist troops are scheduled to arrive near Lyubivka, Volnovakha district. The plan is to transfer troops and armored combat vehicles separately (armor will be “leapfrogging” during the night). In this way, the “DNR” military leadership continues accumulating troops and resources near Dokuchajevsk.

Given the lack of military success achieved by the “DNR” armed gangs in the vicinity of Avdiivka, rumors are circulating among militants (initiated by the gangs’ leaders) about alleged armed clashes between units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the National Guard of Ukraine on that section of the front. These rumors refer to information gathered by “DNR military intelligence,” claiming that Ukrainian military servicemen are in conflict with the guardsmen (“punishers”) – allegedly during the latest incident, Ukrainian commandos “destroyed” 15 national guardsmen. The idea that “Ukrainian armed forces will soon switch their allegiance and side with the militia” is being planted among the militants.

The “DNR” leadership is trying to hold on to their “business” of cashing out social benefits paid by Ukraine to residents of occupied zones. Namely, in order to prevent mass “pension tourism,” information is being actively circulated among the local population that the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) are “photographically identifying” all citizens traveling across the demarcation line into unoccupied territory for the purpose of subsequent arrest, seizure of funds and charges of “financing of terrorism.”

Operational data from Information Resistance:

We observe a relative decrease in the activity of Russian-terrorist troops in the ATO zone in Donbas. Nevertheless, the enemy continues shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops with small arms, grenade launchers, and mortars of both of the main calibers (82 mm and 120 mm). The bulk of attacks and shellings took place in the vicinity of Avdiivka, including positions near Vodyane and Opytne,Zenith,” the air vent of the Butovka Mine, as well as northeast of Avdiivka, as far as Mayorsk and Leninske.

Militant DRGs are active along the front line in the Luhansk direction of operations, along the Severskiy Donets river (Shchastya, Stanytsia Luhanska, and several sections near Trokhizbenka). The enemy is also using UAVs and radio surveillance. Namely, north of Luhansk, two militant “Taran” R-381T radio intelligence complexes were spotted on the move north of Luhansk.

Units of Russian-terrorist troops continue active offense-focused combat exercises in a number of terrorist “training centers” (including the two main ones: the “Lutuhyne camps” and the base near Torez). The exercises are mainly centered around test runs for the “reserve” battalions of the “motorized rifle brigades” within the “1st and 2nd Army Corps,” combined with the increase or resupply of their combat capacity. In a number of cases, the personnel of the so-called “territorial defense battalions” become involved in the training for this purpose.

Militants withdrew a motorized rifle company and an armored group (a tank platoon of 3 tanks) from the area of Yasynuvata towards Yenakijeve.

We established the enemy’s self-propelled artillery positions in the Yasynuvata direction of operations: namely, ten self-propelled artillery units were identified at firing positions on the territory of the slag quarry in the Chervonohvardiiskyi district of Makiivka (the so-called “Hrigorievski banks“). The length of the beeline to the contact line is 10 km. Ammunition for these units is delivered during the day, along the motorway. Security units are stationed at approach roads within 1.5 km of the positions.

In the vicinity of Pervomaisk (Luhansk Oblast), we identified two “Grad” BM-21 MLRS units, three ZU-23-2’s, and two militant tanks, at camouflaged positions. The launching installation of an “Uragan” 9K57 MLRS was spotted near Chornukhyne (east of Debaltseve).

A motorized rifle unit and a tank company (part of the “1st DNR AC”) arrived near Olenivka (Volnovakha district).  At this time, active efforts are underway to equip a new line of defense in the southern outskirts of this town. Militants are also setting up protective shelters for tanks.

According to the information propagated by the “1st DNR AC” staff, two groups of “Polish mercenary snipers” totaling 32 men arrived to join the ATO forces near Krasnohorivka and Mar’inka. The mission of the mythical “Polish snipers” is to “train Ukrainian snipers” and “carry out demonstrative anti-sniper operations against the units of the “1st AC.” It is obvious that this information is being disseminated as a cover story for the activity of a terrorist sniper group near Mar’inka. This group consists of local militants and residents of Crimea, who underwent extensive specialized training under the supervision of Russian specialists – some in the Rostov Oblast of Russia, some in the training center in Perevalne (occupied Crimea). This group, which has several pieces of exclusive sniper weaponry at their disposal, is not part of any illegal gang, but is subordinated directly to the “1st DNR AC” command.

The staffs of “battalions and brigades” of the so-called “1st DNR AC” stationed in the area of Yasynuvata and Donetsk keep mentioning in their official correspondence some “American instructors” – who, allegedly, arrived near Avdiivka and Horlivka to take part in “setting up the counter-battery fire and radio intelligence systems delivered to Ukraine from the USA.” The tone of the correspondence indicates that the terrorist command genuinely believes that US specialists arrived at the front. Specifically, militants at the front are instructed to “pay attention to the nature of artillery fire” and immediately report to the higher-ups “in case of any drastic and unusual change in the firing regime of the Ukrainian troops.”

In the “DNR,” a commission from the Russian Federation finished its investigation into the embezzlement of fuel delivered from Russia. The investigation results showed that up to 1/3 of all fuel supplied to the “DNR” is being embezzled on several levels at once: starting from its loading in Russia (the real amount of fuel was often lower than specified in the shipping documents) and its unloading at railway stations in Donetsk, Ilovaisk and Yasynuvata. The bulk of embezzlement involves fuel “for military needs” – that is, fuel intended for the units of the “1st DNR AC.” The commission also established that the stolen fuel is sold through some 35 gas stations in the occupied parts of the Donetsk Oblast, and a share of profits is sent directly to “DNR” leaders.

In school, they called Nadiya Savchenko “Xena the Warrior,” and at the Institute, “a woman of steel character” #FreeSavchenko

By Gazeta.ua
20.04.2016
Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

Back in school, Ukrainian pilot and Member of Parliament from the “Batkivshchyna” [“Fatherland”] party, Nadiya Savchenko, was nicknamed “Xena the Warrior” after the heroine of the then-popular television series, because she always tried to uphold justice, says Nadiya’s former classmate Tatiana Pivovar.

“If she thought something was unjust, she always fought and defended her views,” Tatiana says.

Furthermore, says her friend, Nadiya Savchenko was “very bold and stubborn.” “If she wanted something, she would do it,” tells Tatiana.

She recalls how in her final years of school, Nadiya, together with another classmate, swam across the Dnieper River, in the spot near the Moscow Bridge where the girls would go to relax.

“We told them – don’t go swimming there, it’s dangerous. There are boats passing through, and whirlpools. But they decided to swim, and they did. We were very worried, but after a while they came back,” – says Tatiana.

In addition, according to Tatiana, Nadiya Savchenko was a good painter, and always had the “best paintings” in her class. And in high school, she learned to play the accordion.

Nadiya’s classmate Yehor Vasilenko recalls how in high school Nadiya organized a tour for the class. He can’t remember where they were all headed – probably to the local cinema – along the way they met their school’s Principal, who believed that the students should have been in class at that time.

“Nadiya was the organizer of this process, and she spoke with the Principal that day, and took the stance that it was our class’ day trip, and we had to go somewhere,” – says Yehor about that meeting.

“She was in charge then, even though she was never class president,” – says Yegor.

Nadiya Savchenko was the only woman in the flight department of the Kharkiv Air Force University in 2005.

Dmitro Pavlyuk, who was in the same group with Nadiya Savchenko, said she was never nervous during exams.

“Among all of us, she showed the greatest desire to fly,” – said Dmitry. He says that everyone perceived the only woman in their department as a “brother in arms,” and some guys “could envy her character and stamina.”

“A woman of steel character” – was his first impression of Nadiya Savchenko.

“When I first saw her, I thought she was a man, because she came to us from the airborne troops, already wearing a uniform, while we came [to the University] as nothing but yesterday’s schoolboys,” – said Dmitry.
