Operational data from Information Resistance:

During the past 24 hours in the conflict zone in Donbas, the most difficult situation has developed in the Debaltseve direction. After attempts to storm the positions of Ukrainian troops near the settlements of Sanzharivka and Trotsky, Russian-terrorist troops are conducting resupply of their advanced units’ personnel and military equipment. In addition, the enemy continues to increase its tactical strike groups on the flanking positions of the Debaltseve springboard, as well as north Avdiivka and in the south-western suburbs of Horlivka.

In the direction of the “main strike” on the left flank of the Debaltseve springboard, a combined artillery group of terrorists has been deployed, staffed by Russian personnel from two artillery brigades of the Central Military District of the RF (26 units of self-propelled artillery and towed artillery, 12 MLRS units).

Through Stakhanov and Bryanka an enemy transfer of replenishments has been noted towards the Hannivka-Verhulivka line (up to 200 Russian mercenaries, up to 15 units of armour, including 6 tanks).

In the region of Popasna the enemy continues to inflict strikes on the forward positions of Ukrainian troops, enabling possibilities for further active terrorist group actions. The Ukrainian artillery actively conducts counter-battery fire.

During the past few days mass artillery shelling has resumed from the side of the enemy in the Petrovske district of Donetsk, and also in the region of Stanytsia Luhanska. In these areas the enemy has concentrated significant numbers of artillery (in the Petrovske district of Donetsk – 5 batteries of cannon and reactive artillery, in the region of Stanytsia Luhanska – two artillery groups which quite actively interact under a unified command).

South of Donetsk in the area of  Stepne – Olenivka, after a battle with active use of artillery, Russian-terrorist troop formations left their positions and withdrew northeast of Olenivka. Withdrawal of the enemy forces was carried out under cover of indiscriminate artillery fire from the region of Dokuchajevsk.

In the Horlivka “intestine” [i.e: surrounded on 3 sides] opposite Vuhlehirsk and Svitlodarsk the enemy continues to concentrate a tactical strike group, trying to prepare a “counter strike” on the rear areas of the bridgehead. The group at the moment includes up to 22 tanks and 34 armoured fighting vehicles, joined into three tactical units, the total number of enemy personnel in the area (including Yenakijeve) numbers up to 2000 people.

Notes from Kyiv: A girl and cookies. #FreeSavchenko

Mykola Serbin, Kyiv resident

Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

2 pm. Novus [supermarket] located at Druzhby Narodiv [boulevard in Kyiv]. Last cash register. At the checkout in front of me is a girl about seven years of age, buying a pack of inexpensive cookies, paying with coins and 1- or 2-Hryvnia bills. When she’s done [at the register], she approaches a tray set up immediately nearby, where everyone willing [to help Ukrainian soldiers] can contribute what they can, and leaves the cookies and a sheet of paper with a drawing on it. On the picture, there is a child with balloons and a man holding the child by the hand, [there are] flowers, a house, sun – just like all the other children’s pictures have [on them]. She put all of this [on the tray] and went to the exit. Something drew me [out]. I grabbed the bags and caught up with the child out on the street. I ask her, why is she alone, and where are her parents? It turned out, she lives next door, and that she went out for a walk. She went to the store to buy some cookies, because her dad loves them a lot. Her mom gives her an allowance, and she collects it, and several times a week [she] buys the cookies. Without a second thought, I tell her that her dad is probably with the military, and they will surely give him the cookies, and that he will be happy.

“My dad was called to war and he was killed there, and the cookies and my drawing are for other dads who are still alive.”…

Everything has sunk [inside me] … I saw the girl to her home …

Her name is Lilia, her mother is Yana, and her dad’s name was Misha. He was 27 years old…

Russians in PACE support release of Savchenko, bargaining continues #FreeSavchenko

At the meeting of the relevant committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Russian delegation has officially stated that it supports the decision to release Nadiya Savchenko, who was illegally captured on the territory of Ukraine.

PACE representatives who participated in the meeting reported this to European Pravda [news].

This means that the Russian delegation is backing down from the position it still advocated on Monday afternoon, and is preparing to yield to the demands of PACE.

The Committee on Migration and Refugees was considering a draft resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. During the committee meeting, the amendment by Rapporteur Jim Sheridan on the urgent need to release Nadiya Savchenko, “illegally detained on the territory of Ukraine,” was put to a vote.

“Senator Igor Morozov from the Russian delegation stood up and said that the Russian delegation fully supports the amendment and votes for it. This is a fundamental change to Russia’s position compared to a few hours ago,” – said a source of European Pravda, who was present at the meeting.

Sources for European Pravda within the Russian delegation confirmed this change in position.

For details of the agreement and the hazards that may be associated with it, read the article in European Pravda to be published on Monday night (1.26.15).

Mark Feygin: Letter to Putin #FreeSavchenko

By Mark Feygin, Russian lawyer for Nadiya Savchenko
1.25.2015
Translated by Voices of Ukraine’s Maria Stanislav and edited by VoU

Mark Feygin, Attorney

To
Vladimir Putin
President of the Russian Federation

Open letter

I am addressing you due to the exceptional nature of the situation in which my defendant, Ukrainian officer and pilot Nadezhda [Nadiya] Savchenko, has found herself. She is accused of being involved in the deaths of the Russian journalists Voloshin and Kornelyuk, which occurred last summer [2014] in eastern Ukraine.

Being her attorney, I held rational expectations for an unbiased and legitimate investigation. In my opinion, even a dimwitted law student can figure this case out – let alone the professional investigative group of the Russian Federation Investigative Committee. The case contains an overabundance of procedural material that would allow for making a substantiated conclusion about the role played by Ms Savchenko in the aforementioned events.

The defense provided the proof of innocence of Ms Savchenko who, at the time of death of the Russian journalists, had already spent an hour as prisoner of the Zarya battalion, which is engaged in combat operations against the government forces of Ukraine in Luhansk. Based on that, it would be feasible to conclude that Ms Savchenko is not involved in the deaths of the journalists.

Seven months is more than long enough to check the billing information of the defendant’s phone, verify the statements made by eyewitnesses, and conduct appropriate procedural measures. However, Ms Savchenko is still imprisoned.

Is it any wonder that such gross injustice resulted in Ms Savchenko’s election as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, her delegation to PACE, and demands for her freedom made by governments, foreign services, and prominent politicians of a number of states? The latter view the persecution of Ms Savchenko as the punishment of a defiant Ukraine, personified. In the meantime, Russian investigators and courts regard freeing the innocent Ms Savchenko to be an unacceptable concession to the “punitive forces” [a pro-Russian collective moniker for Ukrainian forces]. When did valor and a sense of duty become deplorable qualities? Why does a soldier acting with dignity in the face of inevitable death deserve punishment? That was exactly the way she conducted herself when captured in Luhansk.

The above circumstances have forced Ms Savchenko to resort to a hunger strike, as a last-ditch measure to demand a fair and just investigation.

As I write this to you, she has been refusing food for 45 days. That is a long, a drastically long time. The frightening part is, that during my last conversation with her in prison, I clearly heard about her readiness to die. I am not exaggerating; you can easily find proof of my words if you inquire about the whole situation of the Service for Defense of Constitutional Order [and the Fight against Terrorism] of the FSB [Security Service] of the Russian Federation, the agency conducting operative support of the case.

What happens now? The words you said at the December 18, 2104 press-conference, answering a question about the fate of the defendant Ms Savchenko, brought about some hope for the “judicial resolution” of this case, done according to law. The very next trial held to appeal the arrest flushed those hopes down the toilet with a resounding noise.

We can, of course, keep listening to the standard “the court will clear this up,” but we are running out of time, at a catastrophic rate.

The court did not clear anything up about Ms Savchenko’s kidnapping; the court did not clear up the legitimacy of her arrest; the court did not clear up the charges. This creates an impression that in every resolution issued by various judicial authorities, instead of the reasoning and operative parts, only thunderous laughter sounds translating to “why are you even trying, you idiots?”

Let us imagine the impossible: you are my client, I am defending you, and you are looking at life in prison (for example). Imagine me, in powerless attempts to defend your right, appealing to the norms of law, shouting through the press – while your hated accuser indifferently repeats, “take it to court, take it to court.” But there is no court, only a Troika

I appeal to you for the same things as before – for law and justice. It is a public case, extremely public, in fact, and there is no longer a secret way to “clean things up.” You, as a lawyer, are well aware of the old and trivial rule (one that was driven forever into my own head when I studied law): “When you don’t know what to do, do what the law says.”

You know perfectly well what to do…

Attorney Feygin
