This is a very symbolic photo. It was once a famous bookstore, “Classics,” on University Street in Donetsk. It was distinguished by the fact that it was possible to buy books there from practically every religion – from the Torah to the Koran and from the Bible to the Dhammapada. “Classics” always had a large selection of rare and valuable scientific books. And, of course, there was all kinds of esoteric literature, mysticism, fantasy and others. Not only did they have books, which were sold in all other bookstores in the city. In general, it was a store for those finding their way, or those who have found it.
And now …. For me it’s the quintessence of what is happening with Donetsk. It no longer seeks its spiritual path. They have neither the spiritual nor a path. One can do only what is allowed. There is no more freedom, neither freedom of speech, nor freedom of religion, nor free access to information, nor freedom of political opinion nor freedom of assembly. And this inscription on the shield of the boarded up bookstore says only one thing – Donetsk became free of freedom.
