I followed Maidan’s push to retake ground lost Friday, up through October Palace. Near the Instituska St. Metro berkut set up sniping positions. People shot, bleeding on to the sidewalk carried on stretchers began to pass me from the front. Then men next to me were shot. The bullets punched holes in their shields like tin cans. Pools of blood on the street.

Yanukovich will not recover from this – he is murdering his own people with military-grade firepower unmatched by anything within Maidan. They have no sniper rifles. They have rocks, bottles and airguns – maybe some pistols. It is easy to pull the trigger from safety. I would think it more difficult when the person you’re shooting is using a home-made shield constructed from ductwork, who wears skating armor and carries a wooden sword.
