Over there, in Kyiv, people are trying to remove the spell from their land

To tell you the truth, nothing persists in my mind right now apart from Ukraine. Those dudes have been standing their ground for more than two months. And all this time it has been very cold. December was much colder than where I am, now it’s unbearable. The dudes are not giving up though. Holy shit.
This is not a short revolt, when you can enthusiastically perform a great deed and not even notice it – can even throw yourself under a tank. This is a long and exhausting confrontation, and a lot of people must be bored with it as they are bored with a piece of news which has become too frequent. But those dudes keep on standing there. And not a thing bothers them. Something incredible is happening.
I have a feeling that while I’m sitting here in a warm (it’s only +12 upstairs, but still much warmer, than outside) house and doing some relatively useless stuff, there, in Kyiv, people are trying to remove the spell from the territory I was bound to be born on. And they will probably remove it. The process can’t be reversed now, the worst that can happen is that it will slow down. But I doubt it. I know what I’m talking about, because I live on such a spell-free land right now. No matter what’s happening in Lithuania now, no matter how hard life is for many people, this is now a land free from spell and evil. I feel this acutely. To live on such a spell-free land is like being with a man whose fatal diagnosis was disproved. He is still physically weak, he can’t do a lot of things, but there’s more life in him than in a hundred healthy men. The healthiest kind of life, which has just defeated death.
The same goes for the land (country, territory).
It has to be explained separately what kind of “evil” I meant.
The main evil of the USSR was the following: to survive in those conditions you had to be beastly obedient. Or at least give a feigned demonstration of beastly obedience at certain moments. This does not last, the territory where beastly obedience was practised for a long time becomes a territory of evil. You can’t build anything decent on such a land, no matter how hard you try. At first you need to remove the spell.
And there’s only one way to remove a spell: with strength of mind. With will to change. It only resembles politics, but in reality it’s all magic. The best stuff, there’s nothing more powerful.
Lithuania was dispelled with a revolt. A revolt, a heroic deed – whatever you call it. It was performed by those people who died in January 1991 and are now in a military cemetery in Antokol, as well as by those who didn’t die, but as well could have died because they happened to be at the same place and time, with the same aim, same readiness, same formula ” victory or death” which totally transcends man’s biological nature.
As for me, I am very against death. Against the necessity of one dying for something. But we have to admit: it works like this. And I think that it is not death which removes the spell, not the “bloody sacrifice”, but the readiness to defend your opinion at any cost. (the readiness of one man or a very small group of people, unfortunately, is not enough. To do this, you need a certain critical amount, I think in every case a different one. I don’t know how it is calculated. However, what was enough for Lithuania in 1991, has become clear only now.)
Meanwhile, people in Kyiv have been standing for two months already. Displaying true fortitude, and not the easy and happy one-time kind, but the everyday one. To tell you the truth, I don’t know how to help them, sitting here, in a peaceful yet frozen Vilnius, with my relative ass on a relatively soft chair. I can just write it one more time: “Dudes, thank you”.
Thank you.
I think of you every day.
I listen to “Vesna” every day, too – as if especially for you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get warmer there where you are. Maybe, it’s even for the better? Maybe my support is being spent on something more important than weather? I don’t know yet.
Here’s and idea for everyone who shares my attitude to Kyiv confrontation. Let’s listen to this song every day. Or even twice a day – at 7 o’clock in the morning for “larks” and 10 in the evening for “owls”. Kyiv time, of course. No need to do anything else, just listen to it and wish that everything ends well for those guys. And wish them strength. And warmth. And to stay alive.
Here’s even a link: http://www.audiopoisk.com/track/vopli-vidoplasova/mp3/vesna/
You can listen to this song online, or you can download it, so it’s always at hand.
I’m turning off the comments, of course. Apologies to everyone who would like to talk. We all understand, what it is that I wouldn’t like to see here once again. Ignoring the existence of such crap for me is not only a hygienic, but also a professional necessity. So much as after the sixth comment in the spirit of Russian internet users [ie: trolls] I can’t write for a month.
