#Maidan diary: For this regime, the lives of Ukrainians mean nothing

This information just came in few hours ago…

“For this regime, the lives of Ukrainians mean nothing! On December 18th Pavlo Mazurnko (age 41, married with 7-yr-old son) was viciously beaten. As he related in a telephone conversation to a friend on the following day the reason given was “for the Maidan.” A Berkut unit (a special police force unit) intercepted him on the way home and demanded his “documents” (ID). Because he had with him only a photocopy they concluded that he had come to the Maidan and his leadership had held on to his passport. Three Berkut officers, citing, “We are so fed up with your Maidan,” have brutally beaten him up and then left him out in the street. He found his way home on his own. His wife called for an ambulance. It arrived and recommended that he would go to a hospital. Pavlo refused because it would have been very expensive and hoped that he would be fine. But it wasn’t. Two days later he died in the emergency ward of Hospital no. 12 on Pidvystotskyi Street. The hospital was visited by a captain of the Shevchenko district of the ROVD (District departments of internal affairs) because the hospital record had noted the cause as “beaten at the Maidan.” The captain took a statement regarding all circumstances surrounding the incident from the victim’s wife Lesia. The body was taken to the medical examiner. Today the results of their examination were issued in the statement: cause of death—“pneumonia.” Lesia is in shock: “They’ve killed a person and blamed it on pneumonia.” She has asked for legal assistance from the Maidan. We’re waiting. Friends, help us! We need to get the word out to the press, because this will get covered up, we need legal help. If we are standing up for dignity, let’s defend it together. My cell phone is 0632359231 (in Ukraine; with area code it’s +380 632 359 231).”

Dear foreign journalists! Please make a pressure upon your governments and state authorities. Unfortunately we can see that interest in Europe to the events in Ukraine is decreasing. In case of sanctions against at least one of Ukrainian oligarchs or ministers our way to freedom and democracy will become irreversible. A lot of powerful persons in Ukraine just wait for external signal. Ask (or demand) your governments to provide sanctions!

Please, we really need your help!
