“Sociologist: a typical Maidan protester – is a 37-year old college-educated man.”
Maidan protesters are predominantly male (88 per cent), their average age is 37 years old, and 43 per cent of them are college-educated.
This “Maidan portrait” has been revealed in Kyiv by the experts of the “Democratic Initiatives” Foundation and Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
According to the Foundation’s analyst Oleksiy Sydorchuk, the overwhelming majority (over 83 per cent) are people who came to Maidan on their own.
“The majority of people on Maidan are predominantly from outside Kyiv – 88 per cent; residents of Kyiv thus make up 12 per cent. The number of people who came from western Ukraine has somewhat grown (compared to December) and is 55 per cent now. 24 per cent of protesters are from central Ukraine, and 12 per cent of activists are from the southern and eastern Ukraine. The number of people representing a political party on Maidan has decreased from 12 per cent during the previous poll in December to 3 per cent today,” said Sydorchuk.
According to Sydorchuk, the number of college-educated professionals, entrepreneurs and workers has increased, and the number of students and retirees has decreased.
According to the poll, Maidan protesters are less likely to have negotiations with the government – just in December 45 per cent of protesters supported negotiations between opposition and the government, whereas today their number dropped to 27 per cent.
Experts explain the numbers due to the “governmental use of force and repressions” against protesters.
