Dmitry Tymchuk: Concerning rumors about the “termination of the Novorossiya Project”

The media field is actively spreading a statement about the alleged “termination” of the so-called “Novorossiya Project” by Moscow. At the same time, Sergey Lavrov, head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Moscow is the only power speaking in favor of preserving Donbas as a part of Ukraine.

This information campaign carried out by Moscow is rather dangerous, because it makes Ukraine “lower its guard” and harbor delusions concerning a “peaceful regulation of the conflict” – something that the official Kyiv has been long and obviously craving.

We offer you a look at the facts. As of this time (including the events of the last few days), we have observed:

1. Intensified attempts of the Russian command to bring all gangs that operate on the territory controlled by the “DNR” [Donetsk People’s Republic] and the “LNR” [Luhansk People’s Republic] under a single command and create a so-called “Army of Novorossiya.”

To this end, specialists of the General Headquarters of the Russian Armed Forces (with the “support” of the Main Intelligence Directorate and FSB [Security Service of Russia] units) arrived in Donbas several weeks ago. Right now, no one is calling them back to Russia; on the contrary, the “Russian envoys” are putting more pressure on the leadership of  the”DNR” and “LNR,” demanding that they force gang commanders to obey. The main threat voiced in this context is the promise that those who fail to satisfy these demands will be deprived of Russia’s aid.

2. Thanks to the above aid from Russia, Russian-terrorist troops are actively and intensely preparing for winter warfare. This includes supplies of winter uniforms, equipment, winter fuel, etc.

3. Taking advantage of the “bizarre ceasefire” (read: lack of active combat on the part of Ukrainian forces), Russian-terrorist troops regrouped their forces. Units that incurred losses in previous armed clashes have been withdrawn from the front line and are being actively replenished. New units are being formed, by means of forceful “enlistment” (to a smaller extent) and there is deployment of Russian mercenaries to Donbas (to a larger extent).

4. The strength of units of the Russian Armed Forced operating in Donbas is not decreasing.

5. While the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making “soothing” statements, an operational-mobilization conference of the command staff is taking place in the Southern Military District of Russia (specifically, in the Rostov Oblast, which borders Ukraine). Taking part in the conference are the district command, the command of mixed arms units, the command of the Air Force, aerial defense, the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla, as well as the command staff of military formations and units. In addition to that, this region is already stuffed full of units and formations of the Russian Army, deployed here earlier (mainly those of the Southern and Central Military Districts).

All of the above facts speak against the notion that Moscow’s “Novorossiya Project” can be considered terminated. We suggest that you believe facts, rather than someone’s statements and ruminations.

A possible explanation for the decreased frequency of shelling by Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas and for the current information campaign may be the Kremlin’s wish to create an illusion that the mentioned “peaceful dialogue” is possible – in order to try and make the West soften the sanctions. But this definitely does not mean a termination of the “Novorossiya Project.”
