Putin, through Yanukovich, wanted the streets cleared a half hour ago. Police have captured half of Maidan. I was the only photographer present at the battle for the ground around the International Center of Culture and Arts building (October Palace). I escaped major injury but the police hit me with a large rock which destroyed the audio recorder in my pocket.

Maidan fought with air guns, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, but it was not enough to repel flash bangs, buckshot, and superior body armor and shields. They lost the ground.

I am at press center now. Any time Maidan will be attacked. Many have been wounded. These people fight with their hearts and if they lose it won’t be for lack of spirit. They are digging up the street now to make bigger barricades. Hunting rifles are now openly carried.

The pictures I took of the battle are on a memory card I gave to a Ukrainian friend who was worried I would be captured and the photos lost. She and her friends wanted me to go home with them and stay out of this. They are kind. I hope she keeps that card safe – it contains pictures of bravery I’ve not witnessed in my life until today.
