Joerg Drescher: Short term outlook for the time after Olympia finished

15.02.2014

There are strong rumors about what could happen after the Olympia games in Sochi finished. The Kremlin would be free to intervene in Ukraine. We all do not know what the strategy of the Kremlin is, but I have no doubt, that there is a clear concept.

For me it seems the EU in principle hopes, the conflict in Ukraine (actually a struggle for “rule of law” and democracy, as it can be missed in the EU, too) would end good without doing too much. While the EU confides on standards on governmental level (but which do not exist in this manner), the Kremlin has a (Slavic) advantage to judge the situation. It seems to me, too, the Kremlin is aware of this and hopes, the Ukrainians will feel defrauded by the EU and then will give up. However, in my opinion, Ukrainians do not give up, but let’s see, if they will have the (needed) courage to demand the proclaimed “European Values” from the EU, which can also be questioned inside the European Union.

Unfortunately I think, all this will not happen without bloodshed. However, I doubt, the Kremlin would have a real chance to succeed. An intervention of Russia in the inner affairs of Ukraine should lead to international sanctions against Russia. And Russia’s economy is not on the highest level to deal with such sanctions. All in Europe would feel what’s going on in Ukraine (at least at higher prices for energy resources).

The next few days will become interesting: tomorrow’s “viche”; Monday ends the ultimatum to free occupied buildings; for Tuesday (peaceful) marches to the government district are announced…

There is still some time to see the reality of “post Olympia,” however, time goes very fast… Let’s hope the best…
